[A short time after the final, decisive battle against the Festum on the North Pole, a transport's being prepped for Kazuki to return to Tatsumiya Island. He's not in very good condition, currently needing crutches to stand and shades over his eyes to reduce strain on them from bright light. Said battles were not easy for him, with his body pushed even further to the brink, and with Soushi -the person he'd set out to save in the first place- gone at least for now. But still...]

So my eyes are nearly gone and the rest of my body isn't well-off either, though I've heard that they can take care of all of that back home. But I don't even know if the treatments will treat more than just the "symptoms", so piloting the Mark Sein more might still be out of the question even when I'm better. And I know we didn't "save" Soushi... but he said he's still out there, that he would return. It's easier to feel I won't be going home empty-handed than I was afraid of.

I guess that means that this might be "goodbye".

But everyone, I couldn't have done this without you. You were the ones who helped with the L-Boat operation, got the Mobile Doll System from the Titans, helped Ryo and Shouko and everyone else on the island time and time again. You helped in this final push, when I tried to rescue Soushi even. Without you, I never would've gotten far at all. Canon, you especially... I'll never repay you for what you did out there.

And no matter what, Tatsumiya Island will always be welcome to any of you.

This is Akane Makabe... and if you're listening to this, well, I suppose it means two things. One: everyone's not dead yet. And two: someone actually found this.

[You can find Kazuki sitting in his room, listening to something on an old cassette player. It had come in the mail, addressed from home from his father, accompanied with a short note simplying saying "She's here. She's helping us. We'll get you some help soon."]

I'm not sure if the rest of the world's gone the same way as Japan by the time you hear this, or if humanity's gotten at least a little better at dealing with the Festum in the aftermath. But what I know is... someone has to find answers. The Festum aren't like anything else we've ever known before, and with their powers it'd be impossible to just capture and study one.

That's why I'm taking this risk. I'm going to go willingly where everyone else has gone kicking and screaming. With any luck...

... I hope that I'll still be a part of what takes my place.

[And then... that voice. That voice Kazuki's heard every time he's had to sortie against those things."

[And then... nothing but static. And Kazuki's just sitting there, looking horrified. The truth's finally been revealed to him. What happened to his mother...]

[Honestly, at this rate it's insane that Kazuki even is allowed to have a room onboard the Chalice considering how much time he's had to spend in the infirmary. This latest visit came from his newest skirting with the assimilation problem of Fafner pilots everywhere (except Canon, lucky bitch)... one he'd brought on himself when he asked for the Mark Sein's delivery during yesterday's mission.]

... And yet Siegfried still went up the mountain, knowing the dangers that awaited him. And yet he was not afraid.

[Both his mind and his body have been pushed to the brink in recent months, and that's been unfortunate because of how Soushi still needed to be rescued and the Mobile Doll system still had to be yoinked from the Titans. But in the time Kazuki's spent in the medical ward recently, he's been reading the story of Siegfried -a story he finally learned about thanks to not-Fafner Ryou- and it's proved therapeutic to an extent. And when he finishes the story, he just closes his eyes and leans back in his bed, looking up at the ceiling.]

It was worth it out there. Even if I'd died, it would've been worth it.

[After the battle at Orsini Industries, a medical team quickly extracts Deva's pilot from her cockpit - a sickly-looking young girl, currently unconscious after pushing herself way too hard.]

"It's a myocardial infarction! Nitroglycerin, stat!"

[Even though her body is covered by a hospital gown, you can still notice some sort of Ghost in the Shell/Matrix style entry ports located on her limbs and other strategic locations. The medics are busy giving an injection straight into one of these ports as the whole team moves past and towards the Orsini Industries facilities.]

Felicita Arlotti - some of you probably have questions for the bed-bound girl. For now she is sitting in an unfamiliar bed in the medical ward, looking uneasy and disoriented.]

[Loran has mostly just been hanging around White Chalice for a few days on his errand for the Heims, but nos he's pretty bored while waiting for his chance to get back to America. As such he's buried himself in volunteer mechanic work so that he doesn't completely lose his mind. Sure the robots and people here are interesting but he just likes keeping his hands busy more.

That said you'll probably see the white haired guy poking around fixing things or just moving about, since he's a wee bit restless.]

[Anyone bothering to poke their head into the infirmary would see that Kazuki is undertaking an eye exam. Alright, nothing too super-serious about tha-

[Except he's reading from the topmost line on the chart. And when Kazuki frees up both his eyes and has a few minutes to let his sight adjust, he just lets out a weary sigh.]

... About the same as before. Not sure if that's reason enough to celebrate.

[Later, Kazuki can be found sitting in the Chalice's hangar opposite of his recently borrowed Gnosis model. Before him you can see stacks and stacks of newspapers, documents, and even a video recording showing off numerous battles against the Festum, some of which the Chalice had taken part in, others that they hadn't. And one constant with these videos is that when the Festum win, it's pretty much a landslide. And when they lose, oftentimes it's because somebody decides to play the hero and make the ultimate sacrifice. Ryou and Shouko being two examples of that.]

... Soushi.

[The footage reaches the battle wherein he was given the Mark Sein. The same one wherein he saw his Festumized mother before him before she was devoured. By a motherfucker who was still alive after everything Kazuki'd done to kill him three times over now.]

... That's what's going to happen to me, isn't it? That's what seems to happen to everyone in a Fafner sooner or later, after all.

[In the wake of losing Soushi like that... well, to say he's taking this horribly would be an understatement. Eyes red and puffy, he's barely eaten anything since last week, and he's also been paying visits to the infirmary every two days to go through another crazy battery of tests. It's not that far off from what was happening to Ryo a year ago, all things considered.]

I've... talked things over with the Tatsumiya officials that were here along with Soushi. None of them think it's likely that Soushi's still alive or... or even okay.

And without him, the Siegfried System can't even work. That was how we were able to get the Fafners to be at least somewhat safer to use... even if we just ended up making him shoulder the load for us...

Maybe the people at ALVIS could get a work-around for this. I don't know. But if a solution isn't found... then using any of the Fafners is just going to lead to a repeat of what happened to the L-Boat's pilots.

This shouldn't have happened. It was on my watch and I should've stopped that Fafner... and if I had then Soushi would've-

[He clenches up.A moment later and he cuts the recording. He's not going to get over this any time soon.]

[After the Inspectors' attack, Devon is in the infirmary. Burns she suffered were pretty minor and not an issue. The leg, however, was an issue - and she's on strict orders not to move it, being bed-bound for the time being.

This fact does not make her happy. At all.]

Such arrogance and pretense of superiority... Inspectors, is it? I gave you more than just a bloody nose. The politicians present deserved one too...

[Laura's on bad form. It turns out Shifter powers can keep a giant electrified mecha shield from killing you if you get too close, but not from doing a fair bit of damage. So, while those powers are in turn helping her recover quickly, for a while she's stuck taking it easy - and avoiding contact with anything mechanical, because she's still getting zapped by door handles.

And anyone mechanical, which is just unfair.

And her hair looks stupid.

So she's sitting under a tree, trying to read an (ordinary, paper) book, and failing as she keeps dozing off. Actual human (or non-) contact would probably be viewed as a life-saver...]

Nuan Chun? Xue Yi? You're not hiding anywhere you shouldn't be, are you?

[Being under doctors' orders to take a few days off from her hangar and kitchen duties, Laura thought spending time with her goddaughters would be a way to turn the setback around. It turns out seven- and four-year-old girls are not in fact undemanding people to spend time with. And now that they've talked her in to playing hide and seek, she's starting to get a little frantic searching for them.]

[Kazuki's been keeping to himself for quite a while, but he's still kept himself busy reading all sorts of papers that he got, from both the AEUG and the logs about the Chalice's encounters with the Mobile Doll system. It's a pretty vicious idea, eliminating human judgement and morality from the battlefield. It sanitized one's perception of war, saving the lives of soldiers who otherwise would die but at the same time fighting would still be going on and civilians would still die and there would still be destruction. But...]

... The Federation's wasting this program on the Titans. It has a use and they're not even seeing it. All this time they were trying to get Fafners for themselves, and they had a better solution sitting in their laps!

[He's got work to do.]

[And said work is pouring over a computer terminal, trying to write up a letter detailing the system as much as he possibly can. Unfortunately he's not a computer programmer and this would be easier if he he could only communicate with Soushi while hooked up to the Siegfried System. Occasionally he takes a break to get something to eat or double-check something with anyone who's had a run-in with Mobile Dolls, but at long last it's finally finished. And now he can go and get a courier to deliver this to Tatsumiya Island.

[And he's hoping ALVIS will do what the Federation should've done months ago.]

[After what felt like hours of negotiation with Hadou Ruri Kurou was able to talk her (With the help of a few Chalice members and her butler.) into letting him serve as the pilot of Demonbane. As much as the Princess disliked it their situation had gotten dire, although she was able to convince everyone that keeping Demonbane in Arkham was a smarter idea in case the Black Lodge did make another attack on the city. Kurou would be able to summon the Deus Machina when he needed it. This also meant that Kurou would be working with the Chalice thanks to now officially being a drone in the Hadou Group.]

Figured I should introduce myself at the very least, I'm Daijuuji Kurou apparently I'm to work with all of you while looking for the Black Lodge. Apparently I'm also supposed to be the pilot of Demonbane and the Master of Necronomicon.

[The pink haired grimoire was now back on the Chalice she seemed to be making herself at home staring at whatever new mechs might have joined the ship since she left.]

[Well, with all the craziness involving the Festum and then the Harvesters, along with Steam getting sucked into Starcraft II, someone's return kinda-sorta slipped in under the radar, but not any longer! Have Kazuki again, looking in fairly good spirits all things considered!]

[Someone in the Federation apparently was a fan of him. Someone high up enough to keep him out of the clutches of the Titans or any of the other massive pricks. The good news about that was he got to chill on this massive research submarine. He had a room to call his own, could go anywhere within reason, was treated fairly well by the people onboard, and all he had to do was pay the doctors regular visits so they could examine and study him.

[Of course, the bad thing about this was of course he was still stuck on a massive research submarine with no way to get off or even communicate with the Chalice. Not to mention the fact that she was onboard.]

[So then... why is Kazuki out doing patrols right now? Because he needs to honestly do something to keep his mind off of what happened just a few days ago. And who knows, maybe there are some straggler Festum that need a good murdering. He's still alive, so he might as well make use of that life as the Lindwurm-equipped Mark Elf touches down on a small island.]

[After the last mission, Kazuki's practically the walking dead, just shambling back to his room. The Photo Wall of Memorials is getting a new member to it though. Well, it would, but as Kazuki puts up his memorial to Shouko he just pauses and collapses back down onto the bed.]

[Honestly, with the death of Frank and another fresh reminder of Ryo and the overall turnover rate for Fafner pilots preceding him, Kazuki had thought he would be feeling more depressed then he actually was. Especially since he was reading over the combat logs for Ryo and Frank's missions; the triumphs, the setbacks, the defeats, even their deaths. It took the better part of the day, complete with him looking them over during meals or while doing laundry or whatever, but when it was finally all done he looked... refreshed, not sad.]

Living your life like that...

[He can't help but chuckle.]

And all this time the driving factor for me's just been guilt. It's about time I change that.

[Well, Kazuki's gotten re-acclimated to residing on the Chalice again, but at the same time he's found himself growing restless, thinking back to the breakout and Canon. Not to mention the MP Fafner he stole too.]

Why's Alvis bothering with making Fafners like they are? The Federation's certainly seem serviceable and-

[But he stops and sighs. No; this isn't his place. He's in this mess because of what he did to Soushi, so he just has to accept whatever gets sent his way in the name of atonement. Not that he likes the idea in the slightest though. Still, as he makes his rounds through the Chalice in the evening he can't shake that feeling and soon enough he's making his way to the kitchen to get something to drink while he mulls things over and talking to himself.]

Just deal with it, Kazuki. You've got nobody to blame but yourself for being here.

Kensuke has a box, held in his arms, and inside seemed to be a hundred folded paper envelopes. Each had a name scrawled on the front in, and there seemed to be one for every person on the ship. So wherever you are, be prepared to be approached by a dorky blonde and his box.

Inside each envelopes are a stack of photos. So if you've been in front of Kensuke's lens at all in the last year, he's probably got more than a few pictures for you.

It's been almost two days since his last battle, and Azrad is still confined to bed; wrapped in bandages almost from head to toe. Thankfully, he's awake by now, but it doesn't look like he'll be doing any over-the-top fighting anytime soon.

If you decide to visit/bother him, you might catch a glimpse of a worried lavender-haired little girl in a white dress sitting by his bed, like a ghost. The girl disappears almost as soon as you spot her though...

Oh yeah, he's heard about Arkham showing up too. Anyone who asks him about it will get some confirmation: that it's from his world. That said, it's probably best if he goes to check it out later...

[It's practically become a routine. Fafner pilot comes onboard, he needs to go to the hospital after every sortie. And Christ almighty did Kazuki need to, after having that synchro-tastic Fafner dive into an active volcano to save Gentarou and Kensuke. Even now, having woken up in the medical bay and seeing his body was unmarred, Kazuki could still all but feel the sensation of his body boiling away under the intense heat.

[Still, it was his own impatience for ending up like this... and he's just glad that the pain is all mental. Because otherwise he'd be unable to pilot ever again... and there are still too many things he needs to do...]

So, it has come to my attention that the medical records for some of our residents are woefully inadequate. Many of you were unable to transfer your records in the hectic circumstances of your arrival, and that's of the ones who are from this planet.

I've no desire to give someone medicine they're allergic to, and having some baseline of your health is going to be important. So show up to the medbay any time in the next few days.
