[The day was saved and the Earth's been unsealed by the Ruina.  That was plenty of reason to celebrate.  But a good man had lost his life in all of that, and quite a few things had been spelled out for Josh that turned his perception of his dad full upside-down.]

Bian...

[Yeah, he's putting Bian up on the Memorial Wall.  He spent a short while onboard the Chalice as a passenger once after the fight at Adventus's headquarters, that would shut up anyone complaining that he didn't qualify.]

You might've been the leader of the DC, but you never hesitated to take the plunge and lead the charge yourself.  We'll do you proud.

[A short while later though..]

Oh crap.  How're you going to get out of this one?  Use the-

Aaaaahahahahaha.  The flame thrower's not working properly!  Classic callback!

... Wait, callforward.  This is a prequel, after all.

[Josh is nomming on some popcorn and watching an old Hollywood film about some thing.  The prequel actually... which he seems to actually be enjoying for once.  What can I say?  He left Antarctica hating two things with a fiery passion that would rival MacReady's hatred of chess computers that cheated.  He's learned to make peace with one of them, and he didn't feel right without giving the other one another shot.]

Ranna notes casually. She has still not quite picked up a liking for old Terran films, but it is a time to rest after that sortie.

Well, they were civilian-use in the film since it's not a military base. And it's still a horror movie. Of course people are going to do things like accidentally drop an armed grenade right next to a helicopter or find out that, without anyone noticing, someone sabotaged all the vehicles and stuff.

"Does a horror movie require the characters to be incompetent?" The clanner asks curiously, without a hint of sarcasm.

It's not necessarily that they're incompetent... it's more... just like bad luck.

That's one the reason I love the thing this is a prequel to. Everyone's really intelligent in it, and I'm starting to realize I was giving this film a really hard time too.

"So if they are intelligent in the other film, they fared better?"

... Sorta...

... It's just the monster's also really smart. Think of it sorta like a Percolatis in a way, able to imitate anyone perfectly... but also biding its time and ultimately wanting to kill and assimilate everyone.

"Hmm. I presume its motive is tied to its ability to assimilate?"

Sorta. We actually never find out much about the alien, like its personality or anything All we know is that it's ultimately not very nice at all. In the prequel it seems to be in a little bit more of a rush to kill or assimilate everyone, but I'm starting to understand that it just was in too much of a rush and it learned to slow it down a notch in the original film..

"He had no ulterior motives or overriding ambitions after all." Matthew says, bowing his head in respect. "In the end, he was just a man who strove with all his soul to protect the earth."

He touches the scar on his neck. "So many people...too many people could learn from his example."

Yeah. He was the guy who saw the writing on the wall when the Inspectors started attacking the Earth and knew what to do about it. Granted a lot of people didn't want to listen to him-

[Clan Wolf included, come to think of it.]

-But he did a lot for the Chalice and the Earth as a whole.

[Ayup: the Clans really like to think that protecting the earth is their business only]

"Aff." Matthew agrees with a nod. "Even with the end of his life, he has done more to save the earth than most of the authority figures on it..."

He clenches his fists. "...including Kairos Aspida. Who did not show up. At all."

To be fair... and not like I'm vouching for them or anything, this was very much just a small scale operation. The AEUG, the Federation, Britannia... nobody else came.

Bian trusted us with the task because he knew we'd get the job done. And we did... thanks to my dad's precaution of making more machines than just the Aile and the Blanche.

"That is...true." Matthew admits reluctantly.

He blinks. "Your father was a mech designer?"

Yes and no. It wasn't his specific job, but his firm, lab, whatever you want to call it, was about recovering really old, lost technology and getting it working again. "Re-Technology", that's what it was called.

The Sympathia System and the Res Arcana generator; the two big things that made the Aile, Ganador, Blanche, and Strega all unique, are all Ruina tech he found and reverse engineered.

"So these...Ruina had established a civilization on earth before humanity did?" Matthew asks. "Strange, the things you learn about an enemy after they are gone..."

Prequel to a movie a really loved. Based on the whole "oh hey, shapeshifting, assimilating alien monster someone found in Antarctica".

For a really long time I hated it, but I dunno... maybe I just needed to grow up a bit to appreciate it.

Then again, we don't get a lot of movies on the moon.

Then maybe some sort of exchange could be set up. Could even help strengthen diplomatic ties between the Moonrace and other groups.

I'm not really a diplomatic type, but I'll have to tell Lady Dianna the idea.

Righto. We might find some good ones just lying around the ship for that matter.

I don't expect anyone on this ship ever wants to get bored, so there's bound to be some.

I'd say movies are only a fraction of the boredom-fighting forces onboard the ship, considering all the pranksters we have.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do that. Just expressing my surprise that you did. Our opinions change; we're humans, not monoliths made from solid rock. Doing stuff would be hard if we were.

So, do you like it on its own merits, or as a silly thing you don't take seriously?

I'm allowed to change my mind on things! I found out my dad wasn't as bad as I thought all these years, what's wrong with giving an old movie a second chance and finding out I was too hard on it too?

It's not that I didn't watch it, I just never did without looking through the filter of the previous film.
