06: Tryouts! The Brotherhood of Manly (Gender Neutral) Souls has Openings!
[1]
[A public message, posted over the comms.]
"Mechwarrriors of the White Chalice! Champions, Heroes! Those whose hearts yearn to defy all odds to enact Justice!
The Brotherhood of Manly Souls, the greatest of Clans known as the Gurren Brigade, is looking for new recruits! The only requirement for membership is that you strive to do the impossible and kick reason to the curb in the fight for a future you believe in!
To evaluate the qualities of your blazing souls in person, I shall be holding an event tomorrow in the main recreation deck of the Dai-Gurren; what the people of the Earth Sphere call 'Try Outs'.
There will be refreshments!"
[2]
There are indeed refreshments at the tryout. They are tasty.
There is also a large Gurren Brigade flag mounted on a flagpole, like the colors of a boy scout troop. There is a also a table and chair with a sign reading 'Try out here'. The chair is currently unused as Matthew stands on top of the table, gesticulating to a small group of onlookers, among which there seem to be a few Clanners.
"The chief ethos of the Gurren Brigade is to always fight on regardless of the odds against you, to cast aside the whispers of doubt that declare something to to be impossible, and drill through all obstacles in your path, piercing the heavens to create the future that you believe in! This is what the Demon Leader Kamina called 'being a man among men!' Those who–"
One of the Clanners coughs and raises her hand, a twinkle in her eye.
Matthew pauses. "Ah. Mechwarrior Eilena–"

"You keep referring to drills. Why drills? They seem inefficient weapons for a Mech, quiaff?"
Matthew stumbles. "Theoretically, aff. Yet in the hands of–"

"Does your 'Gurren Brigade' have any Getter Machines available for use? I swore an oath to Master Ryouma that I would master all his fighting techniques."
Matthew blinks. "Mechwarrior Chandra! When did you get back?"

"I am glad to see you are achieving your ambitions, Matthew. But why are you talking like someone from a freeborn children's show? And why do you keep referring to this brigade of yours as a 'brotherhood of manly souls'? You have not been contaminated with Spheroid prejudices, quineg?"
"I have not, Tynall! It is simply, well–"
Interject? Apply for a position? Talk to some of the people there?

[Raynor helps himself to a can of soda.]
Re: 2
"Glad you could show up, Paragon! It appears that my Trothkin from my old star are insinuating that I have been corrupted by Earth Sphere ways."
He turns a glare towards them. "Which I have not been."
"It is not an unreasonable assumption: you have been spending a lot of time with the eccentric freeborns on this ship."
"Aff, what Tynall said! I have heard that you have even been...shouting out attack names!"
Matthew turns a bit red. "That–that would not be very clanlike!"
He frantically beckons you forward. "I have been remiss! This is the Paragon Raynor Joz! Raynor, these are Eilena and Tynall Vickers. The quiet one over there is Chandra."
no subject
What's wrong with shouting attack names? It's not like this warns the enemy when you're shouting when already attacking. And it fuels your battle spirit, which is very important in a fight.
Besides, it's cool.
no subject
"Well met, Paragon Raynor Joz. In response to your arguments, shouting attack names reeks of mysticism. A loud war cry works just as well, and removes the risk of giving away your intentions on the field of battle. I see no merit in it."
She grins smugly.
"Unless those attack names of your are actually voice commands to activate weapon systems. You tend to scavenge your mechs from long abandoned caches, quiaff? It makes sense that you would come up with superstitions to explain Battlemech functions you do not understand."
Matthew tenses. "Tynall..." He says, voice on edge.
no subject
It's all about courage and determination. Everyone works them up in themselves in their own way, and for many people, yelling attack names brings the best results. Or do you see no merit in those qualities too?
Your information is wrong, by the way. Most of our mecha are newly manufactured machines. There's no more mysticism in them than in calling your organization after a totem animal.
no subject
Tynall, on the other hands, visibly seethes:
I will not listen to a freebirth accuse the Clans of lacking courage and determination! I–"
Then Chandra speaks up from the side.
"Tynall Vickers. You should offer surkai."
Tynall bares her teeth. "Chandra! Why are you taking the side of this–"
"Do you remember when the Invaders were turning Saturn into a new sun?" Chandra continues quietly. "The entire Clan Wolf Touman could not have done a thing to stop it. It was against this foe that Master Ryouma and the rest of the Getter Team sortied...and triumphed. They are to be enshrined in the Remembrance itself for their defense of Terra. And they all employed the shouting of attack names profusely. Hardly the work of superstitious primitives, quiaff?"
Tynall flinches a moment, then slowly turns to face Raynor. "I have spoken disgracefully, Paragon Raynor Joz. I...offer surkai."
no subject
no subject
Matthew finally steps in. "Tynall Vickers...my Trothkin: passion and arrogance are all well and good, but I will tell you here and now the Paragon is one of the finest and most righteous warriors I have ever met: he deserves no contempt from you or any or the Clans."
He raises an outstretched hand to Tynall...to the rest of the Clanners. "And that is what I am offering you all in my invitation to fight with the Gurren Brigade. Not only to gain victory and honor, not only to defend Terra against the fiercest of foes...but to fight alongside great heroes, alongside men and women of destiny steeped in a thousand epics!"
He waves Raynor forward. "And Raynor Joz has fought in brave battles against astounding enemies and for truely astounding causes! Come, my friend! Tell them the tale of your quest for truth and justice!"
no subject
[Yeah, that's the virtue of Humility. Seems he'll need some encouragement.]
no subject
"Come, come, Paragon! Do not let them think your deeds worth little to speak of! Tell them of your great battles, lest I attempt it myself and get some details wrong!"
Inspiration!
"Tell the story you told me, of how you acquired the Tome, and with it, your Mech, calling, and goal in life!"
no subject
[Since we've heard all of this once already, is it safe to make Raynor tell it all offscreen? Because that's what he does.]
...And that's how I defeated my first Shadow Knights and joined White Chalice. I fought them a few more times after that, but that's different tales altogether.
no subject
Tynall simply stands there for a moment. "That was..."
She looks up, and you can suddenly see a ridiculous amount of moisture brimming in her eyes.
"...The most awesome story I have ever heard in my life!!!!" She declares.

Matthew chuckles and leans back against the table. Eilena smirks quietly from where she is standing.

2
...but, where is he?
Re: 2
But then he makes an effort to perk himself up, planting his feet firmly on the table he is sitting on.
"He died with glory and honor, striking down the Beastman General Tylymph, fighting against hordes of the Ganmen Mechs on Beastmen Mount, claiming a legendary victory with his last breath! For this great deed, he shall live on in song."
Re: 2
His spirit shall persevere, as long as those he protected still draw breath.
Re: 2
"For his heroism and honor, the Gurren Brigade shall carry on his legacy and the message he wished to convey to all. With the final piece of Isorla captured by him, the Land Battleship Dai-Gurren, we shall keep moving forward toward the destinies we, and no one else, shall choose!"
He stares right into your eyes. "What then, is the destiny you have chosen for yourself? What cause do you fight for, that the Gurren Brigade would benefit from sharing in?"
Re: 2
They've taken from me my friends, family, lover, and hometown...twice. To rid this world of EVIL...that is the only cause I have now, so that no more will suffer their villainous ways!
Re: 2
"Those dezgra fiends! With no regard for Zelbrigen, with no pride as warriors! To have destroyed your civilian life and forced you into the path of war...their arrogance must not continue!"
Re: 2
Re: 2
Matthew frowns for a moment. "The metaphorical evil, or the actual organization?"
Return of Trainee Audrey Burne
2) As they bickered among them selves Mineva watched the clanners quietly, her eyes following the conversation smartly. Haman had always said there was much one could learn when your mouth is closed, so Mineva listening and waiting to be noticed.
Yay! She Returns!
Matthew pauses for a moment as he spots 'Audury Burne'. He nods to her.
"Hold a moment. I will return shortly."
He walks over to her.
"It is good to see you again, Trainee Burne."
no subject
She smiled up at with childish ease.
"You didn't have to stop. I didn't mean to interrupt." A child of privilege as she was, such manner where instilled in her years ago. Even a princess, she was still a child in a world where people often preferred to see her and not hear her.
"I came to watch the try outs! It sounded like fun. Is that ok?"
no subject
He steps back up onto the table and folds his arms behind his back.
"The Gurren Brigade has the strength of True Trothkins-in-arms, and the seething passion within our blood to cleave a path between yesterday and tomorrow. But Neg, Chandra. We do not have Getter Machines."
"Stravag. Wait, what of the crimson mech on standby within the Dai-Gurren? The one with the two faces? That one was employing green energy of a similar hue as projected by Getter Rays. I could pilot that."
Matthew's face stiffens. "That mech belongs to another. It is his, and his alone." He says stiffly.
Continue to listen? Get refreshments? Pull a prank?
no subject
Mineva turned away from the bickering men with a little smile and her hands clasped behind her back. How she had gotten away with tricking such men she didn't know, but only felt a little bad about it.
She walked over to see what all the fuss was about. 'Manly men?' As far as Mineva knew gender had little to do with a soldier's abilities, it seemed rather sexist to be going on about men like that. Mineva was sure Haman could take all of them down with only half her funnel rack.
no subject
"I cannot help but wonder how a man with such primitive gender views managed to take you as a bondsman!" Eilena remarks.
"Because he was a great fighter!" Matthew exclaims. "Because there is something to this 'fighting spirit' ethos many aboard the White Chalice talk about! If nothing else...his ideals of excellence and doing the impossible pushed him to do things that reason would have labeled hopelessly improbable...and suceeding anyway!"
He more quietly continues. "And that is why I strive to carry on his legacy...though perhaps I can come up with a more gender neutral way of expressing his ideas."
2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
I know you did NOT just talk shit about kids shows!?
[[Oh, it's fuckin on!]]
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
"They are hardly befitting for true, adult warriors, quiaff? I judge them as stories by the same criteria I judge simulated battles–hollow imitations of epic real life events."
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
OH HELL NO! First and foremost, they gives kids hope for the future. And in case you haven't fuckin noticed, it usually looks pretty damn bleak!
Secondly, those 'kids show heroes' are a god damn inspiration. I know a few people here who wouldn't even be AROUND if that's not what they grew up on.
[[Screw your logic!]]
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
"I am of the Clans. From the moment I was birthed from the Iron Womb I was trained and reared for war. I required no freeborn entertainment as motivation to achieve greatness. "
She smirks. "Perhaps if you and others of sacred Terra were not reared on this drivel, you would not have been deluded into rising beyond your station and aping real warriors, quiaff? Perhaps then you would not have damaged the birthplace of humanity so much."
She starts to speak in the sonorous, solemn tone that Clanners use when they're about to quote from the Remembrance:
"The truth is that you are the descendants–""
Are you going to let her keep wallowing in her pretensions of genetic superiority? Or shall you RETORT?!?!
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
Fucks given; 0. Rage mode; active.
"What you're NOT getting is that most everyone here wasn't trained for shit for shit and... Oh... wait... didn't some untrained fuckers beat you at your own game and now you work for us?" Sadly, Matthew, he makes an example of you and that red cord, of bonding.
"Point proven. We don't need any kind of training from birth. We can let our own situation OR fantasy-fucking-TV motivate us to do whatever we damn well please."
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
"The freeborn has a point, Tynall: you cannot look down upon the warriors that brought down the Behemoth and beat us in single combat." Eilena smiles guilelessly.
Tynall growls. "Why are you taking his side?" A thought occurs to her. "And I remember you winning your portion of the Trial of Grievance!" Against the President! Of the Unites States! "Even I and Star Commander Pryde were brought down by trueborn warriors, disgraced though they might be! This freebir–"
Then the shaggy haired warrior in the corner speaks up.
"I was not defeated by a trueborn that day, Tynall. I was beaten by Master Ryouma. In a mech with far more maneuverability and power than anything the Clans possess, piloted by a talented pilot who was also the greatest martial artist I have ever seen. A master I wound up learning much from. Do you believe that was a fluke, or that I was not at the top of my form that day?"
Tynall gapes, then shakes her head. "That is not–"
Matthew finally decides to speak up. "Aff, it is exactly the point. Mechwarrior Markus is a great warrior, one of the 'Ka-Men' Riders, and deserving of your respect and surkai. All the warrior of the Chalice are."
"Besides..." He growls, folding his arms over his chest. "What about all those 'Clan Spaniel' episodes you have stored on your tablet?"
Tynall goes stark-white pale at those words. "Well, I, that is to say–" She stutters.
Does this mean what you think it means?
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
And then Tynall is called out on TV shit. "Oh, and YOU'RE calling us on watching TV and being inspired. Look, you guys are all about honor and shit, and I respect that. But... remember, around here, where you come from doesn't mean shit for where you can go.
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
Tynall pouts.
" I watch that show to make sure that the Diamond Sharks are not up to some scheme: that is my only reason. My. Sole. Reason. And...it is just wrong to have those who are not meant to fight climb into a mech. It is like watching a five-cycle sibko child waving about an assault rifle. It is dangerous, and–"
Tynall Vickers struggles to phrase this correctly.
"...and the purpose of a trueborn warrior is to fight and keep the fighting away from civilians. When a civilian pilots a mech into battle...we fail in our purpose."
Re: 2 TO THE GOD DAMN RESCUE
He pauses a bit. "There used to be a separation of military and civilians but, when the military can't do their job right, then civilians feel like they've gotta take shit in their hands so... We end up here. And then sometimes it's just an accident."
