Shellshock and Horror / The fracturing of a Hero

[After the events at the DC base have unfolded Mad just rushed to her room as quickly as possible. She was clutching herself tightly, she was curled up into a ball. But she was doing her best not to cry. She was failing badly of course. The tears were still there and she was choking back sobs.. but whenever she did noticed she would just rub her eyes and shut them tightly and try to force herself to stop.]

Fuck...fuck... those...what the fuck were those... goddamn...

[She's struggling to get her emotions into check, but it was near impossible with how hysterical a state she's worked herself into.]

[He walked over towards her a bit, not sitting down but at least not being distant.]

So the stravags got through and noncoms died. You are not responsible for their dishonor.

[He sighed a bit.]

I remember watching as a sibbie when the Smoke Jaguars razed Edo from orbit. Hundreds of thousands died, most of them civilians. I suspect I felt the same way you do now.

Because they were insecure in their ability to rule.

Yet if we allow these dezgra actions to stop us in our tracks then they win as surely as they would if they had capped our cockpits. So you must steel yourself and be even more prepared next time, because we are Warriors and the burden rests on our shoulders whether we like how it feels or not.

[He put a large, steadying hand on her shoulder, prepared to show at least that tiny amount of mercy.]

Good. I will tell the elementals you are not coming today...you are late enough that there would be little point. But I expect you to make it up tomorrow.

[He retrieves a small and well worn book from one of his pockets.]

I want to lend this to you. I have had this copy of The Remembrance since I was younger than you. My ancestors faced many situations like the one you just described. Perhaps it will offer you insight the next time.

[Implication: there will be a next time. He's spent too long in the Occupation Zone to believe anything else.]

Then tomorrow, pup.

[And with that he gives her shoulder a none too gentle squeeze and turns to leave.]
