Shellshock and Horror / The fracturing of a Hero
[After the events at the DC base have unfolded Mad just rushed to her room as quickly as possible. She was clutching herself tightly, she was curled up into a ball. But she was doing her best not to cry. She was failing badly of course. The tears were still there and she was choking back sobs.. but whenever she did noticed she would just rub her eyes and shut them tightly and try to force herself to stop.]
Fuck...fuck... those...what the fuck were those... goddamn...
[She's struggling to get her emotions into check, but it was near impossible with how hysterical a state she's worked herself into.]

[A slight hiccup and she rubs at her eyes, giving the angel a smile so weak you could barely even tell its there. Her eyes were red from all the crying and rubbing at them she did.]
...I... didn't make 'nother mess did I?

No! No you didn't! This whole mess wasn't your fault! Don't even think like that!

He wants to tell her that it's not anyone's fault, but that would also excuse him - and that's not right. He's an angel supposed to protect these humans here. Some enemies may be above them - but none, not one, should be above him. He doesn't get to lose. (Yes, Pit has a small bit of legacy racism on the human/angel thing to work through. Someone should probably call him on it somewhere down the line).
So he hesitates, and simply returns the hug for a few seconds, visibly trying to find words to explain what he wants to say...]

I know how you feel. But you can't take the weight of everything that happens as your own fault. There are those who are to blame for this, and it's not you. It's the ones who did this. Blaming yourselves is only excusing them in your minds.
But even if there was nobody to blame... Pit, Madeleine, remember this. Sometimes, things happen and we can't do anything to avoid them. But you can't just dwell on it. "What if" is a sentence whose weight has crushed gods themselves. And if you trap yourselves under it, when the time comes where you can do something you won't be able to move. [Palutena speaks softly, but with the heft of experience behind her words. She knows all too well what she's talking about, here...]

[Mad... can't say anything else... Palutena's words were hanging over her head. She closed her eyes and shivered. She was just trying to work them out... something difficult in the state she worked herself into...]
