How The Star Captain Got His Groove Back: Part One

[1: Network: Immediately Post "A New Path"]

I must know: what is the secret of the Spheroid obsession with female breasts? Anyone who has this information, come forward.

[2: Action]

Five opponents have been beaten in the Trials Of Bloodright held over the previous month. Resnick's about to face his last.

A blustery afternoon, and snow accumulates on his mech. He sits in the cockpit, his eyes open and taking in everything through his mech's sensors. He stands above, around, through himself in the total immersion of the enhanced imaging system, no longer man but a metal giant with thunder and lightning in each hand.

His opponent is entering the Circle Of Equals, piloting a massive Jengiz omnifighter. Resnick is no stranger to shooting down fighters, and hasn't thought much of them before. Even here, out on the plain where he can't use cover, he's confident.

The fighter appears as a blip on his sensors and a tiny dot in his new vision. He waits for it to close.

What follows is a systematic destruction. The heavily customized Jengiz peppered him with gauss rifle and PPC fire from outside the range of his pulse lasers. When he finally managed to lock on with his LRMs, twin anti-missile system shot most of them down before they could even threaten it, and the rest ineffectually peppered the fighter's hull, confused by its ECM system. Roaring with frustration, Resnick activated his MASC system, sending his Timber Wolf towards the fighter at a gallop. Perhaps he could corner it against the Circle's edge...

Attempting to gain a last little bit of closure with it, he activated his jumpjets, and was pleased to see the fighter turn in towards him for a strafing run. In a comparison of firepower and armor, mechs were superior and he could still salvage his bloodname that way.

They bore down on each other, Resnick melting armor off its hull with his twin large pulse lasers. Then the fighter abruptly pulled up...

A clear shot at its belly. But what were those things detaching from it?

Mid-jump, Resnick's mech took a volley of vibrobombs direct to the face. His mech fell backwards and his head whiplashed, giving him a hell of a concussion. One wing half cut-off, the fighter pilot was still the clear winner.

When he awoke in the infirmary, he was informed that his opponent had won the bloodname. But how, he thought? It was as if the aerospace pilot had known his configuration and tactics in advance. He'd known he'd jump. He'd been...he'd been trained by someone who'd seen him fight many times.

Tynall.

One dire wolf pup had proved unwilling to adapt to the wild. Surprisingly not malnourished, it had still bullied its way onto the Chalice during its last Russian stop.

A truly massive animal now, brown with blood red spots that gave it a wounded look, it followed Resnick like a large, menacingly toothed shadow.

"Why do you not leave me be?!" He cried, winding up a kick for it but thinking better as it bared those long fangs.

Isaac was his name, the one he'd impulsively named for the sibkin he'd accidentally-on-purpose killed.

There is a matter concerning the aftermath of the battle that you should know.
