Phase Twelve: ...And Back Again

[The Chalice is still moving west across the Pacific when a few familiar faces arrive in the hangar, hot on the heels of a familiar ship heaving in to range over the horizon. The Nirvana's back to supplement the Chalice's mini-fleet again, and it doesn't take long for a shuttle to bring the three tourists back aboard, along with the supplies and souvenirs they've brought with them. The three are as refreshed as you might expect after a couple of weeks' vacation in a place like Meijire, but Laura's also looking concerned at what she could see of the ship on the way across, and what she sees in the hangar.]

So - what happened while we were gone? We didn't get much news after leaving London... and it looks like the Chalice has been through a lot...

[Laura nods.] It... well it was a wonderful holiday, but even apart from that, it... cleared away a lot of clouds that were hanging over me. It was exactly what I needed.

And it was a wonderful holiday. Meijire's a beautiful planet.

"And...your parents?" He was learning a bit more of the signifigance of parents to non-clanners (particularly since the incident with Mad) but it was still mostly a mystery to him.

They're... civilians. Really, truly. Everything we do here, the things we run across, none of it's really real to them. I don't think they know what to make of me, now.

But we talked, and they met Dita and Lily, and they're... as okay with everything as they can be. That does help, somehow.

"I do not see what they could possibly object to. They should be proud of the honor you have brought to your lineage." He paused, feeling a bit guilty about springing this on her right after she got off the shuttle, but the situation was so insistently headache inducing he knew he needed her advice. "There is a...situation with Madeline Caine. You may have heard it."

"I think they are, underneath it all." Still, the vote of confidence is reassuring.

"I've heard a little. It sounds like no one's quite sure what's going on..."

"I am. There were some disturbing revelations about Mad's lineage which caused her much distress. She lost control with some of the Predesu unit." He sighs. This wouldn't be the first time he's come to Laura for advice on an interpersonal issue. "I think she is honorable to the core...but I do not know what to do when she lets her distress and anger lead her around." As if he's never done the same thing.

[Laura pauses, looking for the words.] What I've heard about it sounds like a hell of a shock. She just needs help coming to terms with it... I think.

Be patient. And don't let her do anything rash, but... be on her side. It sounds like she needs that more than anything.

"I imagine...to have your lineage withheld from you your whole life..." He can empathize there at least, coming from a culture that puts such emphasis on genetic ties. "I will do all I can for her. My relationship with her is much like the one I have with you...only I do not have to stop you from charging into a fight on a perceived insult, quineg?" In other words it's kindof like My Little Sister Cannot Possibly Be This Hotheaded.
