02 Aliens On Earth

1) [Dita's looking through the observation windows at the landscape around them. It was beautiful and terrible at the same time, with the damaged landscape from numerous battles, to the alien architecture not associated with Mejire.]

It's so haunting...


2) [She's in the hangar of the Chalice, helping the mechanics that stayed behind to do some adjustments to any of the mecha that they're allowed to work on. Who knew Dita was a competent mechanic?]


3) [Lunch time! She's cooking up a Mejire dish for everyone, some kind of variant of roast turkey no less. Whatever it is, it smells DELICIOUS. Come have some?]

What happened here exactly? I only heard a little during the briefing with the captain about the state of the earth.

Second Impact happened. A meteor was about to fall on Earth, and a powerful robot called HALO was built to stop it. It failed and exploded, which messed up a lot of Earth. The fragments of the meteor messed it up further. Then the Festum went to town and various governments started to fight for power, throwing nukes and other best toys they had around, which... you get the idea.

That was fifteen years ago. I was five when it happened.

So it's like the old stories of why Mejire and Taraak were colonized. They said that there was some kind of disaster, and they sent a fleet of ships out into space to colonize the planets out there.

Hey, come on now - Earth is not in such a bad state that Taraak looks like a good place to colonize in comparison. Scientists are working on slowly making it better.

[While Werter is talking, Prometheus does his job of cleaning the window. Or its lower parts, at least.]

Mmm. I guess that's a good idea. Still, it's a little scary to think I'm here on Earth during the colonization year...

Don't think of it as scary. Think of it as the most unique trip you had in your life yet. At least that's what I'm doing.

You're right. this is unique! I've never been to Earth anyhow, so I guess that makes me the first Mejirian to step foot on it.

[Prometheus has trouble reaching the higher parts of the window, so Werter gives him a hand by lifting him. Why can't he just clean it himself, history may never know.]

Mmm I guess so! I kind of like that phrase. [Has never heard the famous line anyhow.]

It's a direct quote from the first man on the Moon, ages ago. It's not a very interesting place compared to Earth, though, unless you happen to like rocks. Or lunar bases destroyed by the Festum, but I'd rather not think about that.

The moon? Oh that must have been in the early spacetravel years, right?

Obviously. That was maybe the fourth step in space exploration, long before Mobile Suits were invented. We're on step... around twenty now, I'd say. Not that most people care about space exploration much anymore. They're too busy trying to survive.

Still, Mejire and Taraak haven't been beyond the storm yet. So I guess I've still got the same love for exploration.

If you're into exploration than you'll find plenty of sights on Earth. A country can be diametrally different from its neighbors, and there's a lot of them. Often not liking each other much, but that's a detail.

We have people aboard from everywhere except maybe the antarctic cycle, so why not start by asking them?

There's one right in front of you, you know. I didn't spend the last 20 years in a vacuum. Actually, since space counts as vacuum, the people who did probably have interesting stories too.

Hehe that's true. Okay, what was your home like, growing up?

Well, I had to witness the whole world going straight to Hell, so even though I had the luck of living in a big city that didn't get bombs dropped on it, it was still pretty hard. I didn't have much of a childhood till my teenage years.

Mmm I see. So it was hard growing up until you gained some independence of your own?

Yeah, but those aren't related events. I had good parents - hell, I still have, and they're probably worried how I'm doing. It's just that things in Germany, and most of the world, got better over time. The first few years after Second Impact were very difficult, even to comparison to all the mess that's happening lately.

That does make sense. Did you contact your Fama and Ohma then after we returned here?

We call them Father and Mother here. And the former tends to be a man.

[Werter remembers the lecture on Mejirian procreation, it seems.]

Anyway, I haven't yet. Berlin is too far away, communication over such distance is impossible since Second Impact destroyed the global network.
