Phase Eleven: Keep Calm and Drink Tea
1. (the hangar)
[After the chaos of the fight, the hangar crew are working overtime on cleanup duty. Laura's pitching in, flying around in The Great Pretender, righting fallen mechs and clearing heavy objects.
For now, though, she's in the open cockpit of the Knightpolice she's been working on in her own time for the last while, and which came through the confusion blessedly unscathed. There's one last finishing touch to cap off her modifications to it, and this is just the time to make it. There are some odd whistling noises, a fan whirring, and what looks like - no, it's not smoke, it's steam rising...
Laura sinks back into the pilot's seat, out of armour and so with her leg propped up in a cast, and takes a deep, satisfied drink from the mug with the 501st's insignia emblazoned on it.]
Ahhh... got the kettle working at least.

2. (the Arboretum)
[Even using the Pretender for all her activity, Laura's under doctor's orders not to push herself too hard, so she's sitting untransformed under a tree trying not to scratch at her leg in its cast. She's not exactly relaxed, though - tapping away at a tablet, it looks like whatever she's reading or writing is giving her some grief.]
They probably won't even recognize me. Maybe they'll just think it's a sick prank.

...I could spend a night with you, if you're into that sort of thing...With some time I could get money, but I don't have much now...

[Laura's tensed up.]

[Deep breath. Laura's not sure what Yui's just revealed about her life - and that she's so matter-of-fact about it only makes it seem worse - but undoubtedly the last thing she needs in response is a freakout.]
It's not that I'm offended. [...Well, a little, at the suggestion that she'd...] But you don't need to... offer me anything for something like this. And if anyone aboard ever expects an offer like that from you for anything - just - you can get whatever they've got somewhere else, all right? That's not - you don't have to do that here.
no subject
...Right. Normal people don't do that sort of thing...
Sorry, I...won't do it again.

You'll find most people aboard are willing to help out however they can. Especially if you're willing to help them in turn. Not many keep score. Just ask, and you'll be all right.
[Laura turns her stylus over and over, unsure how to broach the topic that's just occurred to her.]
Have you settled in, by the way? Have you talked to Dan?

Dan's the ship's AI. You can talk to him at any of the terminals.
He's the one who assigns you a room. It's random, but if you're not comfortable with your roommates you can just ask him to change you around. And you can always sleep in an unoccupied room - having one assigned is just easier, but if you need time to yourself... I did that myself quite a bit when I was new aboard.
[The important part, as far as Laura's concerned, and as probably can be deduced readily enough from her emphasis, is that Yui absolutely does not have to choose between sharing a room with someone she doesn't trust, or sleeping rough.]

[It certainly doesn't sound like Yui knew she could sleep in the rooms, and since she's been around for a few days...]
You've been a great help, Laura.

...Ah, and that sounds really corny now that I've said it. But it's still true.

Still, it's good to be a part of the team.
