[Surprisingly for very few people actually familiar with Devon, her attitude regarding food rationing and obeying rules in general left her in a holding cell. She'll be there for a while - so if you're concerned about her feeling sad or lonely, by all means come visit!

Extra consideration: Devon's amplifier is gone so no Shifter shanenigans or summoning armor this time. At a first glance, she doesn't look too concerned about this, or pretty much anything at all. Too busy leaning against a wall opposite to the entry door.]

He stops for a moment to give her a look that says "What did you expect?" before turning to go.]

[Aidan had never been to the brig before. He wasn't even aware it was occupied, part of him wondered why there even was a brig. When he found Devon he looked at her with a blank but scrutinizing expression. It was the same expression he gave everybody when he first saw them, but Devon might not be aware of that.]

Why would I want that? What could I possibly gain from that? You are a prisoner, this is a fact. The why doesn't really matter. It changes nothing.

Me being here matters not. It is only a temporary location, as good as any other.

What matters is jealousy of human beings, who see others unlike them and try to instinctively bring them down to normalcy. This is what is attempted here.

Yes. Which is why I know that humans are fearful or jealous of those who are different, better than them - even other humans. And they want to destroy that difference.

It is natural for them to act like that. Only by conquering that nature can you be better than a mere animal.

After all, we do all we can to destroy cockroaches. A lot of people look down on them, but cockroaches are superior to humans in almost all respects. If they had opposable limbs and sentient minds, they would likely be the dominant species of the planet.

Their bodies may be adaptable and hard to kill, but what you said is true - no sentient minds. There is no thought behind their actions, only instinct.

Thus, they are meaningless.

I take only as much as I need, which is less than the daily ration. This means the rationing is unnecessary - following it is meaningless. To adhere to it is to adhere to rules for the rules' sake.

Are they? What does sentience really get us? After we have used our sentience to blow up the world, cockroaches will still be skittering around as normal surviving off of whatever we leave behind. I've seen what sentience wrought. I was three years old when colonies fell and the world as I knew it ended. Now people fight for survival, in a world which lacks the resources to properly sustain them.

While cockroaches are plentiful. They skitter around, probably oblivious to the world, and yet, for all the world has changed, their part in it remains the same.

In that light, can you truly say they are meaningless?

Wait a second. So because you eat less than the rations, you ended up in here? [He pauses a moment, presumably processing the statement again.] So you were getting something outside the rations, then? I mean, that's the only possible way this could have happened!

And besides, even if you disagree with the rationing, it's still necessary. If we don't control our usage, we'll run out before we have a chance to restock. [Van learned something from his time in the desert before he joined the Chalice, and he was going to use it.]

Whatever humans or other sentient beings decide to do, be it utter obliteration of themselves or the world around them...

This is a conscious decision, therefore it is the one that matters. An animal skittering around is like the laws of gravity drawing two objects together - something that may be important or not, but not praiseworthy anyway. Because praise is wasted on those who cannot hear or understand it.

[Not that Devon would praise anyone. She seems to get into this discussion of beliefs, though. Almost like if she wasn't imprisoned or anything.]
