Memento Mori

[At night, House Consenesco's Chosen Champion is standing on the observation deck, looking at the dark horizon.]

For death to strike so suddenly...

Truly, it may come at moments most unexpected.
I wonder did he leave any regrets behind.

He was on the battlefield. I'm sure he knew the risks...

... Though I thought we'd shaken off that rash of bad luck from February.

Ranna walks onto the deck, then stops as she spots Alessandra.

"Up so late?"

"Aff, it is also the perfect time for paperwork," She smiles a little faintly at that.

"You have heard then, quiaff?"

"Am I... interrupting, then?"

Ranna nods as she walks up to Alessandra's side.

"In a way, Resnick illustrates our way of life so well."

"It was brought to my awareness sometime ago that we tend to 'retire' our warriors much earlier than other cultures."

She pauses for a bit, seemingly trying to find the right words.

"So many of us burn bright, burn fast. He rose up in the ranks, earned a bloodname and died in combat. His genetic legacy has been secured - that is perhaps the final goal for many of us."

A smile.

"Aff, that is what many in the Clan would do. We Wolves tend to juggle duty and glory better, even as many times both will coincide.

One could say that may also be the difference between Crusaders and Wardens."

You seem to be at peace with his death. All according to Consenesco principles, huh...?

That's rare. Would you mind enlightening me?

Well, are there any principles that are healthy when taken to an extreme? There's a reason "moderation is key" became such a cliche phrase.

Extreme moderation would be always picking the middle road, I'd imagine. Not a good thing either, sometimes one of the extremes is the proper answer. It's all situational.

[Werter coughs.]

Our space barbarian. I'm not happy about his death either. He should've stayed around more, see more of Earth. Broaden his horizons.

"Fah." Matthew says to himself, leaning against one of the railings.

"Regrets are for freebirth swine who have no purpose in their lives, and no will to follow through with their convictions. Resnick was a trueborn warrior, that lived each moment of his life as it should have been. His glorious death–"

His voice suddenly chokes, cutting the toxic stream of Crusader Clan dogma off. His entire frame tenses. His hands clench at the railing with white kunckles.
