I'll be giving a brief overview of how Midchildan magic and Devices work on the deck in 15 minutes. Anyone interested in learning how to use a Device, come on up - I'll have a stack of basic Devices you can try out.

[2 - Action]

[Sure enough, in 15 minutes Chrono can be found on the deck of the White Chalice with a stack of basic Devices, which will happily change into a staff form for anyone that wants to try, Fate having already shown up to help; he'll wait a bit for people to show before launching into a basic explanation.]

Some basics before we start: Midchildan magic is powered by the user's Linker Core. Everyone has a Linker Core, but some people have stronger Linker Cores than others, and like a muscle, it grows stronger with use and practice. Devices are designed to help channel the output from a mage's Linker Core, and give form to spells. As for how to use it... [He draws a training Device.] Set Up! [The staff extends to be about as tall as Chrono, with an obvious fancy end that probably does something special.] Now I can cast spells through this. A lot of Midchildan magic is trusting your instincts; you might be able to cast a spell or two just by feeling. I can help beyond that.

[Shirley laughed, rubbing her head and adjusting the goggles on her forehead.]

Thanks Chrono! I'll definitely ask Nanoha about it. It would be neat to have a second option along with my usual magical ability.

[She nods eagerly.] Sure! Come at me, Chrono! [She shifted into a stance, thinking up a name for her barrier. Cause spellcasting needed names, right?]

You're on. We'll start off easy, with something I know your Barrier Jacket should stop... mostly. [Chrono slings S2U onto his back to leave his hands free; a small ball of icy-blue light forms in his hand before he fires it at Shirley. It's pretty obvious to her this one's a freebie, as it's slow and relatively weak (and unnamed), but it'll get her attention.]

All right, sounds good. [She concentrates, intoning silently, Defense Barrier as she holds out her hand. A shield flares to life in her usual blue, but the markings are definitely midchildan. It stops the attack easily, but obviously Chrono was taking it easy.]

Oh, good, shield magic, and it looks pretty sturdy, too. In that case, this one'll count! S2U, Stinger Ray! [With an echoing call from the staff, Chrono fires a number of small projectiles at Shirley! And these ones aren't training shots! Not that they'll hurt that much, but... Don't get hit~]

[Shirley expanded the shield as much as possible, pushing her untrained secondary magic to the limit as it hammered into the shield. Several hits cracked the shield however and it shattered under the assault. Snapping up reflexes, her ears and tail popped as she threw up her Witches Barrier as the last shot almost hit her in her face.]

Ahehehehehe.... I guess it's not as strong as I thought it was...!

That... was honestly better than I thought it would be. Remember, I've training in Midchildan magic at least as long as you've been training as a Witch, so my magic is a little stronger than average. That versatility of switching between casting styles is useful, too. If you didn't already have a place with the Witches, I'd be remiss not to scout you for the Bureau. Good work, Shirley.

[Untrained but with better durability than the average Bureau clerk, and versatility beyond? Yes please.]

Now I'm really looking forward to coming along for a Neuroi hunt.

Heh thanks. It was reflex really when I threw up my shield since usually in my line of field, taking a hit like that usually means a long hospital stay from Neruoi.

[She nods, grinning at him.] I'd like to learn a little more, and try to learn a few more shield spells. Witches focus magic through weaponry so it'll be easier.
