Several of Clan Wolf's elementals are laid up in the infirmary, not looking happy as they're hooked up to machines that beep and whirr and keep them alive. They have gruesome wounds: huge pitch black bruises bespeaking internal injury from vicious snouts, chunks ripped from their skin. Whatever they fought back there, it was vicious enough to put several of the huge, genetically engineered power-armor troopers hors d'combat for weeks and months.
Then a documentary about marine life comes on the holoset left to keep them from getting too bored and suddenly every hand reaches for a weapon. React? Change the channel?

It's almost time to go and that means the dire wolves are due to be released soon: Ulric (gray brindle), Natasha (all black), Vlad (red brindle), Kaya (grey with brown paws) and Isaac (brown with blood red spots). Terrifying creatures, they each now stand the height of an adult human. These are not the cuddly pups you made much of six months ago. These are wild fucking animals and even the elementals wrangling them onto the dropship are wary of them.
Still, if you were kind to them, they may remember you...if you're not too scared to get close.

It had been a hard day and Resnick was not one to usually burn the midnight oil. In the wee hours, he was sprawled face down on his spartan bunk. With both roommates absent, he could drift into deep sleep as he drooled on his pillow, dreaming that he was wearing his ceremonial leathers in a vat of sour cream while a floating nova cat (the animal, not the Clan) told him that it was developing an attraction to corpulent women. It had been a long day, full of rocket rides and terrible dolphins who were most definitely not thankful for all the fish.
He certainly didn't expect what happened next.

"No, I can't win them all, and I really should have known this was coming but it still..." She closed her eyes, her lips pulled tight around her teeth, the tears wouldn't stay in check any more, and they rolled down her soft cheeks even as she felt ashamed of them. "I couldn't bring myself to cry in front of him," She put the heel of her hand against her forward leaning forward on herself. "I'm sorry you have to see it now."
Of course Resnick was right, she could not, would not have gone with him, for the first time in her life people depended on her for more than a paycheck.
"I could never leave Gainer, or Cynthia. But I had some fucked up delusion Micheal, Gainer, and I would all leave here together, you know, like a family. He always seemed to want that too, but apparently..." She shocked her cry into her hand, and looked up at Resnick with apologies and regret on her face. "I fucked him over when I fucked you, and then I fucked you over when I went back to him, and in the end, I'm the one who gets fuck. I guess I deserve it though."

"We have both made enough mistakes. You have made your surkai though, quiaff?" The Clan rite of forgiveness, though he meant all kinds of apologies. "There is no need for further guilt. And you definitely need not worry for me." Indeed, by his own culture's standards she'd done nothing wrong. Sexual bonds were easy to forge and break.
His hand remained on her shoulder. His own was available to lean on. That was about as much tenderness as one could get out of the normally gruff mechwarrior. If anyone implied they'd seen him in such an emotional position, he'd react just as if a Spheroid had been told they'd been caught in the middle of a sex act in public.

"He said we would see each other again, and that's it. But that could mean anything." To Adette, since he hadn't expressed directly what he wanted, she assumed he wanted nothing from her. "Either way he's gone now, and I'm still here." It was good to have Resnick there, and even though all Adette seemed to be doing was whining, she knew that she would have been in much worse shape if Resnick wasn't there. "Angry or not, it's over now." She sighed deeply, sniffling. She pressed her moist cheek to the back of his hand on her shoulder, closing her eyes she took a few more deep breaths before taking the bottle and knocking back more than a few mouthfuls of the ice clear liquor.
"Resnick, I'm really thankful we're friends. Things where a mess before, but I'm glad found a way through it." She looked up at him and leaned forwards and draped her drunken arms around him. "I don't know what I would do with you, and Ranna both."

"Aff. I would not have wanted you as a rival." It wouldn't have been the first trothkin he'd turned to one because of his pride.
His arms went around her shoulders and he looked down at her with an exasperated, indulgent smirk. Things, it seemed, had worked out for him.
"I consider you my true trothkin, Adette. And it is good you are such for Ranna too, or our competition might grow out of control." There were probably echoes in that of the way Allesandra spoke to her. That is to say his rivalry with Ranna was pretty much completely one sided.

"I'm a mess." She signed drunkenly, and shamelessly buried her face in his shoulder. " Bet you never though you'd have a trothkin that cries so much." Tomorrow she could feel bad for this, but right now the vodka was in control. She had forgotten the feel of his warmth, but it was calming now, and although there was nothing sexual to her actions, she was glad to find he would still embrace her, even now.
"I love you both." She took another deep breath, and put the trembling in her chest to rest. "It's think it's funny, how difference you are from each other. And even so, you're both exactly the same. Well except Ranna has a way nicer ass than you do. Sorry." A weak joke between sniffles and hiccups. "I'm glad I have friends like you guys at times like this." She pulled in a little closer to him, and tucked her head in the crook of his neck, her arms around his lower back, breasts pressed casually to his chest.

He reached with the free arm and roughly wiped her tears with his sleeve, frowning a moment. Another thing to be jealous of Ranna for! "I shall endeavor to work until my ass surpasses hers then." How though? Power-twerking? "I suppose there are certain commonalities that come from us both being part of the Warrior Caste, quiaff? Just as you know when you meet another freeborn you will share certain aspirations that a trueborn like myself would have a hard time understanding."

She closed her eyes as he whiped her cheek, and took a deep breath. "If that's how you want to put it. I like it. No surprises from you guys. All straight forward." She frowned again, her head getting rather swimmy now, as alcohol coursed through her veins, and made goose flesh rise on her neck. "Not like Micheal, he was full surprises..." Her lower lip trembled as she said it. "When he smashed all the speakers on the ship with a sledgehammer to make that awful music stop just for mmmeeee." There it was, she had reached the point of inebriation she was had seeking. Sha-wasted.

'Plenty of other fish in the sea' wasn't exactly innovative advice but he thought it was solid.

Of course Resnick was right, he was always right. A woman like Adette didn't stay single for long. She nodded drunkenly, sniffling again.
"I really thought... this was it ya know? Not a damn thing wrong with that man, not one damn thing I could complain about. Guys like that only come around one in a million years. If I hold out for him, it'll turn out he's already got a wife by the time I get there, I just fucking know it. Men like Micheal are a hot commodity. Powerful, strong, gorgeous, clever. Dear lord the width of that man's chest!" Drunk rambling that came out a bit slurred, on hand gripped Resnick's shirt, the other held the bottle, now it was getting rather empty. "Don't take it personally~ I mean those tattoos of your- nothing will top that as long as I live, but..."

He looked down to see his chest wet with tears and snot and couldn't avoid frowning slightly. "You have survived far worse than a...breakoff." He meant 'breakup'. "And such men will seek you out now that you have some renown to your name." The idea that a powerful man might wish for a wife subservient to him didn't occur to him.

He stood, pulling her up and supporting her on his arm, with some effort. A limp human being was one of the most difficult objects to move, as all EMTs knew.
"You must sleep. You are dwelling on the past." Great Father knew he recognized the signs from experience.

Adette's knees bobbled under her weight, and she clung to Resnick to keep from falling. Her high heels only seemed to exacerbate the problem. "You can't put me to bed! You're not my mother!" But she didn't fight him at all, somewhere in her intoxication she knew it was time. She had taken enough of his for one night, and the moment her head hit the pillow she would be out like a light. "I'll go to bed wh'n I wan'to, and dwell on shit wh'e I wan'to!" Her lips started the slur her words a little, but she held stead fast to Resnick, and followed as faithfully as a (drunk) hound.

When he got to her door, he needed both hands to keep her up so he had to use his knee to open the latch and kick it open.

And damn it if he wasn't sleeping!
"What are you doing so late banging on my door..." he bitches, rubbing his eyes. He hasn't picked up on Adette being there at first. "H-hey... what's wrong with Adette?"
Fuck you, I'm shitfaced!
Adette was all but carried in, her hair tumbling around her shoulders, and masking her face.
"Michealll lefftttt meeeee." She whined loudly, her body more than ready to be in her bed. Tomorrow she would be embarrassed for being this shit faced in front of Gainer, but she had to sleep it off somewhere. Adette made it to the edge of the bed, and pulled deftly at the buckles of her shoes, dropping them away and pulling her legs up into her bed, her head hung low on her shoulders heavy with the weight of intoxication and romantic devastation. Although the hang over was sure to be killer, Adette knew she would live through it, as she would live through this 'break-off' as Resnick put it.
"I'm sor'y if we woke you up."

When she managed to get into bed, he looked down at her with an indulgent smile, realizing that this kindof thing happening was the eternal price of being her trothkin.
And then back to being stony faced when he remembered Gainer was there.

"We'll talk about it tomorrow or something but... it's late..." At least according to his biological sleepy-time clock, it was late. Traveling the world meant... sleep times were relative... You sleep when you're tired, and Gainer was tired.

Adette nodded and she pulled the covers over her head, using the privacy below to peel off her stockings, skirt, and vest. She dropped them on the floor unceremoniously, and took one of Resnick's fingers in her hands.
"Thanks. I owe you one." And then to Gainer. "Let's do that..." Then Adette rolled over and promptly passed the fuck out.
