Discovery #30 (with apologies to Roads)

1. [After the last fight, Werter can be seen where he left it - inside the mech-sized Prometheus in the middle of the village, keeping up the plasma field around it to stop the moisture from escaping while work is being done on a more permanent solution. He can't do anything for now but watch the workers, so needless to say, he's bored.]

Not all of a hero's work can be exciting, I guess. I wish I brought a book.


2. [After the town is protected again, Werter (and Prometheus as well) can be seen in an unused room on the Chalice where he tended to disappear over the last few weeks. Only it's not unused anymore, but filled with various lab equipment - stuff he already had, or traded, or borrowed. A lot of it is improvised, including pots and glasses taken from the ship's dining room, and the primitive computer used by Prometheus to communicate with humans can be seen in the corner. Werter looks over his work, including a note on the door:

WOLF* CHEMISTRY LABORATORY
Assistants welcome.

Well, this is nowhere near close the level of the lab back at college, but it should be enough for my experiments. Just one last thing...

[Werter takes a white lab coat from a nearby rack and puts it on in one smooth gesture. So does Prometheus - yes, apparently someone made a tiny lab coat just for him. They stand next to each other, arms crossed with confidence.]

There. My vacations were long enough. Time for science.

(Emmy comes into the lab and looks over all the equipment. It is truthfully nothing compared to the tech from her original time, but that is an unfair comparison as her age had time machines.)

This is an interesting set-up you have here. What are you trying to do?

The ship constantly encounters strange substances on its travels. I can analyze and do something with them better in a lab than my own room. Less hassle if something goes wrong, too.

Nah, there are some good areas, we just don't visit them too often for some reason.

As for the not-so-good areas... Well, that's post-Second Impact environment for you. The Ruin is bad even by their standards, though.

We need to make sure the people who live here won't die horribly the moment we leave, first. And after that... We have a thief to catch. He's the only reason the Chalice even entered this wasteland.

Want to switch with me? I can't do anything but stand here and keep the force field up until the workers are done making a physical barrier. Not the most fun thing in the world, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Make sure the Führer of the kitchen doesn't find out that you "borrowed" these things, he might use his only threat of taking away your food from you.

[She decides to take a look around.]

[Pit takes it and pages around it curiously. To feel demeaned by being given such a book despite being older than Werter he'd have to realize it's a kid's book, which he doesn't]

Hey, making books so the pictures pop up like this is pretty ingenious! Man, humans in this world have had all sorts of neat ideas.

Well, there are many experiments I want to do in the future that are much less of a pain to perform when you have someone to help.

[And cleaning, but Werter knows better than to advertise with that.]

Don't worry, I did it with his permission. Or without his prohibition, at least.

You'd be surprised how many functions of specialized lab equipment can be replicated by everyday household items. I already did some things without this lab, like making sleeping gas or analyzing the residue from a Colossus.
