Post-Mission Repairs

It took a bit, but repairs on the zords were coming along well, thanks to Dr. K who had insisted they rest the machines for a while. Something to do about biofield re-sequencing. The physical repairs were done but the team was already on downtime. Dillon had gone off somewhere, Summer and Ziggy behind him, Scott was somewhere else and Flynn? Well he was taking a nap in the hangar, leaned back in the drivers seat of his large custom build humvee. Someone could probably get his attention rapping on the window.

[Laura's rested enough to be physically recovered from her exertion against Yolanda, but the mental effort was enough that she can't safely work on machinery yet. Instead she's running messages - which in Flynn's case means a thermos flask of soup left on the humvee bonnet. She's about to move on when it occurs to her that unattended items may fail their saves versus Luger, so she taps on the window, enough to wake Flynn only if he's not sleeping deeply.]

[Flynn groaned as his eyes flickered open. Yawning, he noticed Laura there. Rolling down the window, he grinned at her while wiping sleep from his eyes.]

Hey Laura. What brings ye to th' RPM side o'th' fence?

[She hands him the flask.] Making sure people don't collapse from overwork in the middle of repairs. Looks like you've got exhaustion covered, but there's still hunger.

You weren't working down here all the while I was recovering, were you?

[He takes the flask and unlocks the other door if she wants to sit down.] Well, Dr. K's working on the zords an' basically chased us all out for damaging the Lion Hauler an' the Shark Zord. So I came down here and started working on th' engine till I decided I needed a nap.

[Sitting is good!]

No slack for having literally saved the planet? The Doctor's a harsh taskmaster, I take it.

I couldn't sleep so that was a bit on my end anyhow. And yeah, Dr. K doesn't give us ANY slack. Actually to be honest, this is downright lazy for us. By now, we've had fought about twenty Attack Bots back home.

...Right. You're used to having it pretty rough.

Still, this should be a rare opportunity to actually relax. Don't forget to take advantage of it. Um, including by finishing your nap if I'm intruding.

That's true. I should head back to get some real rest later on. But I don't mind talking. I got what, thirty minutes of uninterrupted sleep? That's good enough for me for now.

What about you? You did a lot out there that battle. You sure you should be out and about now?

I've gotten as much sleep as I need, for now. That fight took more out of my mental focus than my physical stamina, which is why I'm bringing people food and not operating heavy machinery. I'll be fine for a while so long as I take it easy, though I'll probably crash pretty hard again tonight.

I wasn't sure it was safe to check out so early against that last general, but it seems it paid off. At least, there weren't any more of those pylons around for the last fight. That would have been...

That's good. A mental health day is always perfect as well.

Yeah those pylons are what kept the Megazord out of the fight. Dr. K didn't want to risk the machines's biofield from being affected. It could have been worse.

Oh, now you tell me. So I've called his wrath down on me, too? How bad is it going to be?

...Seriously, though... I'm glad it helped.

I think wrath just sort of covers it. The worst we can get is training with the Fridge Cannon.

Not a problem. I was feeling a little peckish anyhow. [He unscrews the thermos and sniffs the contents.] Oh nice, coffee.

Not quite Rim's special blend, but we have some other good stores.

...The Fridge Cannon is some sort of... freeze ray?

I'll have to try that sometime.

[He shook his head.] Naw, it's a shock cannon inside the fridge. Dr. K uses it to defend the lab as well as train people.

...

...Train people... not to snack? Or to endure shocks?

Dillon has a 100% Invincibility Shield. The trick is tha' it won't work unless he completely has faith in the technology to protect him.

So it's a sort of walking over hot coals thing?

That's a strange sort of condition for human technology. Is it something Dr K invented, or something discovered?

Sort of yeah. At least the analogy is correct in that regard.

It's something Dr. K invented and powered off what she calls the universal biofield. It's a field generated by every living thing on the planet, and beyond. It also insulates our machines since they're built with animal DNA as the basecode as well.

Living things... and it can power something like that? Perfect invulnerability?

What sort of things do you have that use this biofield? Anything I could use, to test whether it works for me?

[Laura's looking unfocused in to the middle distance, either about to doze off or else lost in thought. Well, or both.]

Yeah, the entire gauntlet of RPM technology runs on it. Although bonding with a morpher is permanent since it'll be locked to you afterwards.

Ah, weapons, zords, equipment, all sorts of things, many of them used outside of transformation. I could probably get you a Engine Cell and a gun and we could try it out at the firing range.

If it won't use up something valuable, then I'd like to try. I still don't know how my powers really work, so I'm trying to see what I can figure out from things that seem like it. Something that needs living things to run, that works better if you believe in it...

So in principle, could anyone use a morpher? Or do they only work for certain people?

Aye. It's one of those things that sounds absolutely goofy, but kind of like a superhero once you get used to it.

And yes, they can. The amount of qualified users in Corinth was very low, but we managed to pull together a team. Ziggy's the exception because he strapped on the morpher to protect it from Tenaya.

I see. We never figured out what makes someone a Shifter. It'd have been interesting to try giving you an amplifier and seeing if it was something similar...

Although I'm probably reading too much in to things. We were never colour coded, for one thing. And none of us were old enough to drive.

Really? You don't know where the source of your powers came from? That's interestin'.

Yeah, being able to drive helps. Corinth's a contained place an' getting around quick is a plus.

Where the Entities came from, why they were attacking, why the amplifiers worked for us but not anyone else, how our powers worked at all - SECT had whole teams of people trying to work all that out, but it was like every theory they came up with immediately found some exception.

And our fights were spread out enough that they flew us around. Once we got on site, most of us had our own ways of keeping mobile. We only had to fight in cities a few times. It... wasn't pleasant.

[Flynn knew the feeling as he nodded.] When Venjix attacked, Corinth was the last bastion in the Asian hemisphere. People from all parts of the world were coming to live there, safe from the attacks. We were lucky to keep the casualties down to a bare minimum each battle.

But some of us won't forget the day Venjix attacked our homelands.

[Laura looks thoughtful.]

Now that things have opened up again, that you know the rest of the world's still out there, do you think many people will try to leave Corinth?

Maybe. But... for a lot of people, Corinth is still their home. When we closed those gates, we were expecting nothing would be out there anymore. For some of us, that's all we have left really.

I know when this is all over, I'm going back to Corinth. My dad's there an' all.

It's good to have a home to go back to. Somewhere to fight for.

You're welcome t'visit when you get a chance to. Ah mean, just saying and all since we're friends and stuff. And there's actually a lot of pre-Impact stores an' franchises there.

Ever tried a McDonalds before?

There was actually a place that used to be a McDonalds in my neighbourhood when I was growing up. Just a chipper by then, but they'd kept the arches as a landmark.

Trying the real thing sound like an invitation I shouldn't let pass. I'd extend the same, but I don't know what my old neighbourhood's like these days...

That's true. Still if you're ever in Corinth, I'll treat you and anyone else that comes by. Thankfully by now, we've got some real supplies coming in so we can afford to give some away.
