2. [Dita's slipped away from the festivities for a little bit to the garden below the deck of the bridge, and she's looking at the night sky.]

So full of stars. They say there's a heart in each one of them. What star is Mejire and Taraak's? Is it still glowing brilliantly?

[It's such a sad, if happy feeling for Dita, she runs a hand across the railing.]

Ahah... yeah. I mean, nothing against lesbian girls, or anything I just thought y'know, the culture would be leaning towards that kind of thing.

I mean, an all woman culture? Be danged if I didn't give a pretty girl a couple of glances.

But when someone's never seen a guy for most of her life you can't blame them for being curious.

... god there's a lot of pretty girls here. It makes me feel kinda plain to be honest. And all their hair too, I don't think there's anyone with a usual color. I see browns, purples, greens, blues...

Oh, but your hair's lovely! I don't know how you keep it from being ruined when you're out flying.

Wind magic. Basically when I'm flying I'm shaping the air currents around myself like a jet-stream, so that I can fly faster without it getting swept around. It's kind of how I don't get incredible drag with my chest so big.

[Well timed. Laura tries to pass off her mid-drink sputter as a cough.]

Ah... yeah. That must be handy.

You okay? I didn't make you choke or anything, did I?

I guess magic is useful in all kinds of ways.

It is. It's not very good for attacking without weapons, for us at least, but I have been learning all sorts of stuff here.

The ship certainly is... I guess "melting pot" isn't too far off the mark.

Yeah it really is. There's a lot of varied skills here.

My old team... we used to think we had it pretty rough. This place gives some... perspective.

It's good to see people doing well, though. The Bureau mages, your ensign...

Yeah. And just when you think there's something that won't surprise you, it changes everything in an instant.

I guess it must have been pretty weird from the start, for you - when you found out you could use magic, I mean?

[aceshighmach]

It was, but it was kind of obvious in retrospect. I was always able to run fast, and I was an energetic kid. Turns out pa served with a couple of witches in the day, so he got me interested in becoming a Strike Witch after I broke the old land-speed record.

You broke the old land-speed record... on foot?

I guess that would make it obvious something was up...

Hehehe yeah. Pretty much. I guess all of my magic came in at once during a race, and I found myself doing twice the laps before I realized what was up.

Wow. I can't imagine what that must be like. For me it's either on, or off.

Doesn't seem to have traumatized you too badly, at least.

Naw, if anything it made me more excited and wanted to get more out of my speed.

You're doing that, all right, from what I hear.

Maybe someday we should try me boosting your speed. Unless that would feel like cheating.

That would be cool. I'm trying to break mach 1 on a striker. No one's done it yet.

Pretty close, but I haven't been able to break the barrier yet.
