I fill my lungs with fear and I exhale

If you're looking for the hero that-almost-wasn't today, you'll find in medical ward.
Kensuke lays awake and stares at the ceiling for a long time, the weight of what happened today crushing down upon him. Sure, he had been in other battles before, but he had never stared death in the face like he did this time...
Aside from the heat exhaustion, and battered shoulders, his emotions where still in a state of shock. Kensuke was unsure what to think or feel after a day like that. HE knew he had done his job, albeit he had not done well, the Angel had still been defeated.
That's what was most important right?
The protection of everyone.
The Angel's defeat.
He rolled over and closed his eyes, trying not to left those moments in the lava play through his mind anymore. He needed a distraction, anything to take his mind of those flashes of memory he had long since banished from his mind.

"Yeah, fine..."
(Today's Secret Word is 'Fine')
Kensuke could see between the two of them, they could sure throw a hell of a pity party.
"I'm... thankful. I really am. I'm sorry about your mech. Are you going to be ok?" He flipped his legs over the edge of bed.

"Fafners are synched up to their pilots like that."

"The Eva's are like that too, so I feel you pain." Kensuke shook his head, why would any create mechs like this? Why was it important for kids like that to have to endure so much pain.
"Then I'm twice as thankful to you. That was really ballsy of you man. You don't even know me and you still..."
Kensuke sighed.
"Thank you. Really. I don't think I can say it enough."

He took a moment to sigh and rub his eyes before turning back to Kensuke. "You were part of the... the L Plan, right? That chunk of Tatsumiya that just up and vanished a few months back?"
no subject
"I was." He looked away. "But I don't like thinking about it. The whole thing was just... weird man. I can't even bring myself to review the tapes of video I took during that time." He looked at Kazuki with empathy. It seems they where not so different after all.
Kensuke had alot to learn about what it meant to be a pilot, but he was learning everyday, for those he called 'comrades'.

Still though, Kazuki just clenched his fists and sighed. Ryo'd risen to the challenge. Soushi couldn't even pilot and he was contributing as much as he could too. THe bar'd been set plenty high, and he would live up to it.
"At any rate, I don't blame you. All we can really do is do our jobs as best as we can."
no subject
"I'm learning that." He nodded. Of course what Kazuki said was true. "Slowly."
Kensuke knew by comparison he was weak, he was nothing but a child. But he was trying grow, and to learn, and become as strong as he could. These dark days where just part of the hard lessons life would teach him.
