Second Instruction

[1 - Not really locked but not useful to anyone but the Nanoha mages]

[Aboard the Asura, Chrono's called his mages to a meeting; that brings Nanoha and Fate to the main training room, the largest and best shielded he could think of. On a table rests a box, within which sit... could those be?]
Nanoha, Fate. I know it's taken longer than expected to get Raising Heart and Bardiche back online, but... we finally got them up and running again. We've run all the tests and they're ready to use. I'll brief you further on how they've changed when you activate them next - please don't do it here, I don't think even this room is shielded enough to take you two throwing your usual beams around. [He shows a warning expression, almost daring one of the two to try it so he can chastise them, before smiling.] I do want to note that I got a few extra parts in with the repair crates for Raising Heart and Bardiche, and you'll be pleased to know that I've fitted the Devices with Bureau-standard life support, approved and rated for space combat. The tradeoff is a larger draw on your magic, so don't expect to do as well in vacuum as you do hovering over Uminari City, but we won't have to sit on our hands if we're not planetside.

[Broadcast to all parties:] This is Enforcer Chrono Harlaown of the Time-Space Administration Bureau - I'm sure there's at least someone on the ship I haven't met, so I'll be sure. I'm certain I've already briefed almost everyone on the Wolkenritter's capabilities, but I wanted to make sure I got one thing clear: they're dimensional criminals wielding the power of one of the most dangerous Lost Logia the Bureau recognizes. If anyone wants to refresh their memory on their abilities, I'll be in the main training room aboard the Asura. I'll have a stack of training devices with me as well, if anyone would like further practice.

[Indeed, Chrono's holed up in the training room, a table holding the magical equivalent of a projector, a now-empty padded box, and a small crate full of training devices that a number of pilots may have seen before.]

((OOC: I know at least two people need information, training, and/or Devices from Chrono as part of upgrade lines, and I've been a little lax on tagging this last month or so; Chrono will answer basically whatever here. Apologies to affected parties.))

So you were able to get life support added to our devices so we can travel in space...That's amazing! I didn't even know that was possible for a device. Thank you Chrono!

(Fate has a big smile and looks down at the new Bardiche. She hugs it close to her body.)

It doesn't seem like it's a common part; then again, looking at the specs, even someone at my level would have a hard time without exceptional control and power to offset the drain. [He frowns, glancing at S2U's storage form.]

I'm glad to help, though. Aside from our obligation as part of the intervention we're executing, it's a good idea to be prepared for whatever may come.

[While thanking Chrono, Nanoha is also curious, excited, and anxious, all at the same time. What exactly was the new Raising Heart capable of?

Still, she heeds the Enforcer's words and nods, almost beaming.]

Mmh, I agree!

Although, I never really thought about fighting in space before...is it that different from ordinary flying?

[Chrono nods.] Arguably the largest difference is gravity. Fighting on a planet means that no matter what you do, at the end of your action your motion is "down" - your flight just needs to compensate for that, and it's easy to come to rest since the air will slow you down anyway.

But out in space, there's no gravity and no air to resist you. Even the slightest move will send you flying off in one direction, and if you overcorrect to stop yourself then you'll go flying off in the other direction. It takes practice. Lots of practice. [A grimace.]

Does the Bureau possibly have a simulator that we can use so that we can try and get used to moving in space so we can be ready for it during a mission?

Sadly, I don't have that simulator data. Yuuno could probably get it to me, but it would take time. I can create zero-grav space in this training room, but... that's about it for now. Remind me later and I can set it up.

Inquiry regarding the nature of Lost Logia.

Lost Logia are the Bureau's classification for dangerous artifacts, typically from the lost colony of Al Hazred. That colony developed amazingly powerful magical items, some as weapons, some for other purposes. But they grew too powerful, and an accident destroyed the colony. Its artifacts were scattered to many worlds. It's part of the Bureau's mission to contain and regulate Lost Logia. The Book of Darkness, which the Wolkenritter possess and are managed by, is an extremely powerful Lost Logia.

Acknowledged. Lost Logia is a general term for any such artifacts regardless of their origin correct?

We tend to use it like that... For legal purposes the Bureau Charter uses it as a blanket term, I think.

That would make a number of the mecha utilized on this ship qualify as Lost Logia.

On some level... There are different classifications of Lost Logia, though. Some are even considered safe enough for use. Although, I do concede that several of the units we use are probably powerful enough to qualify.

I'm banking on those units being willing to help us with the dangerous Lost Logia being used against humanity, though.

[Chrono blinks.] I don't mind you using one, that's why we have them... but how are you so sure you'll break it before you've even used it?

Well, the Zweilicht as it stands now is built to dump prodigious amounts of power in a very short period of time. I'm going to need to figure out a way for the device to hold back on that dump and spread the energy use out over time, which will be...problematic.

It's something like trying to hold back a river with a dam.

Only I have no idea how to build magic dams.

[Have a Laura, looking somewhat enthusiastic rather than just grimly determined for the first time since the attack.]

Dimensional criminals, eh? And they ended up on Earth... strange how many people seem to.

[She edges slowly up to the devices, trying not to look too eager, stopping if there's clearly an infodump she's expected to absorb first. Once she reaches them, she pauses with a hand hovering over one, uncertain.]

Ummm... so what do I do with it?

Well, we think the Book's master is here too... We have no idea where to find him, though.

[The dormant Devices look like metallic playing cards.] Pick one up and tell it to 'Set Up'. It doesn't have a name, but aside from that... [He draws a different-looking card from his jacket.] S2U, Set Up! [And with a flash, the card he's holding expands into a staff.]

[Laura watches Chrono, and matches his grip on her own card. Deep breath...]

Set Up!

[Whoa, staff from nowhere! Shouldn't be too surprising for someone used to armour from nowhere, but the feel of it is actually quite different.]

Whoa.

[She's staring at it in astonishment, as if not quite believing it would work.]

Good, good, it's working for you. As I recall, you're a Shifter like Devon, so you don't need a Barrier Jacket... we'll skip that and move right to the next step.

[With a gesture, a target appears downrange: a glowing ring.] Your job is to take a shot through the ring there. Try to visualize yourself firing a beam... you should be able to feel magic tugging at you. Focus that and, when you think you've got it, fire. Magic is instinctive for most people I've seen, so I don't have more than that for you, sorry.

[In fact, it may be noticeable that Laura's amplifier is not on her wrist as usual.]

...All right. Let's see...

[Laura concentrates on the tip of the staff, around which colours begin to swirl. Focusing harder, she closes her eyes, and the colours coalesce and converge on a small, pink-white sphere.

The sphere takes shape more distinctly with each of a few slow, steady breaths until she opens her eyes again - and, surprised, lets it fly off to go wide of the target.]

Ah... I wasn't expecting it to come together so quickly.

[She looks sheepish.]

[A nod.] Not bad, especially not for a first attempt. Magic takes different times to cast - weak attacks are almost instant, while stronger spells actually take time, and sometimes incantations. Try it one more time.

[Internally: Pink? I don't need another Nanoha, let alone one with another power set that'll make her the most powerful thing the Bureau's ever seen.]

Okay... I'll try.

[Laura closes her eyes again, and the ball of light forms again, strobing chaotically up and down the spectrum, but slowly, if unsteadily, settling on that pink-white mix. This time, although she concentrates for longer, the light doesn't increase much in size... but she when she opens her eyes, without surprise causing it to fire off prematurely, it releases in a steady beam over several seconds. It's on target... but apparently not very powerful, based on the underwhelming impact it has on the wall behind.]

Wow... that's a strange feeling. It's... hmmm. What decides if you're good with magic?

[Despite being a PreDesu pilot, Nanohana still has reservations about her own skills and what she can do. Indeed, the fight proved that she needed to expand on her skills just in case.]

[Entering the room, her curiosity gets the better of her and she picks up one of the devices, CHYPrE by her side.]

Wow... so small and simple!

Just like with the others-desu!

Mm. Training Devices are simple on purpose, to make sure they're easy to use and easy to recognize. Custom Devices are unique and generally built around the strengths of the wielder. You're welcome to try it out...?

If it's okay, then I'll be glad to! Is there a certain way to do it, though?

Go for it, that's why they're here. Hold one of the Devices and call 'Set Up'. You'll get a staff, and possibly a Barrier Jacket, which is our armor. If you don't get the Jacket right away you can call it up afterward. Your Barrier Jacket generally takes its appearance from what you think mage armor will look like.

R-Right...!

[With a nod, she instinctively holds it out]

SET UP!

[And, like Chrono said, the device forms up into a staff, followed by what looks like a more stylish form of her hardlight flight suit. Which is really flowery.]

...it... it worked! I did it! Oh, wow, this is so cool!

[Eri was there too, with Coffret on her head and Mepple in her arms.]

So we just pick these up and say Set Up right?

That's it for the beginning, yes. After that I'll go over how to cast, but... Just grab one and call 'Set Up'.

[Grabs one, and examines it for a moment before taking one into her hand.]

Set Up!

[There's a liberal pillar of light as she appears in full hardlight outfit, but her hair is long and blue this time.]

[Chrono smirks, evidently trying not to laugh.] Well, that's an... inventive use of Barrier Jacket. You look like you're right at home with being a magical girl.

I'm not well versed in water or earth magic, you're on your own for those. Unless you'd like to take a shot? [He calls up an interface with the training room; the shields are very much still intact, as Nanoha and Fate were barred from practicing in here yesterday, so it should be fine.]

Well not to brag or anything... [said Eri, grinning. She nodded and started to go into one of her usual routes, tracing the Device around in a circle.]

Marine... SHOOT! [A blast of bubbles fired off, slamming against the targets.] Heck yeah it worked!
