Nothing so selfish. I'm not naive or petty enough to think the world needs my saving. How many situations can you name that ended well because somebody 'wanted' to save the world? Besides... a lot of the romance of "saving the world" is washed away once you've actually done it. Why waste my time trying to create a world that needs saving? Let's face it...
[She crouches down next to Laura, and peers at her with deep, scarlet eyes. They seem oddly empathetic, as if sensing that Laura, more than anyone, might relate to her feelings on the matter.]
Nobody truly wants to save the world. We do it, and we don't regret what we've done, but at the end of the day we never wanted to save the world. We just want to convince ourselves that we're better than we actually are, and so we romanticize and fantasize that the way to do that is to earn the world's recognition by saving it... but you know, don't you? You understand that once you've reached that point, you start realizing things about yourself that will drive you to the brink of insanity. That once you've finished, you can never return to the person you once were, you can't bask in the things you've done because you know that for all the good it's done, that even though the ends justify the means, the things you've done and experienced will haunt you until you die.
I wanted the world to survive through thick and thin... but I never wanted to be the one who saved it. But you can't just say "find someone else" when it's your turn to throw your life away so others can live theirs. Nor did you, I imagine.
