A dreary day in the not very creatively named Wolf City. The bloodhouse chapel was still starkly unpainted, reflecting the neccessity for more pressing construction, though pyramidal and grandiose in structure. Sprinkling rain drummed against the metal of the walls outside.

In hundreds of cubbies, there were small pyramidal glass things, each containing the ashes of a Warrior. Their name (given and bloodname) were displayed, and if one pushed a button, a holoprojection would appear detailing a brief biography and their accomplishments. There were also small alcoves next to each one where mourners could leave flowers and things like that, a concession to Spheroid tradition.

Resnick's ashes were carried in by Loremaster Daphne Vickers, who had his strong jaw and choppy blond curls, followed by Khan Phelan Kell, a man who, though not of impressive build, clearly commanded the respect of all the Wolf clansmen in the room. Both wore ceremonial fur-trimmed leathers.

"Today we are gathered to honor a fallen comrade. The honor of the Warden way guided him here and he became the first of our Clan to set foot here since the Exodus. He fought hard for his new home and represented us well to the Earth Sphere. As Khan, I found his regular reports invaluable. He earned his bloodname and carried it proudly, earning him a place here. And now he has earned his rest as well.

It is good and natural to mourn when one has lost a good friend and trothkin. However, know that there are two ways we will honor his legacy so that he is not forgotten. First we will redouble our commitment to stop the Word of Blake from bringing the Terra he worked so hard to protect under their heel. Secondly, his genes will be used to make the next sibko of trueborn Warriors. He will live on in them, as he will in your memories and hearts. Seyla."

'Seyla.' echoed all the clanners there. Phelan looked over at Ranna and resisted the urge to wet his lips. Writing a speech to honor someone who was, by all reports, a fervent admirer of his most hated rival and until recently a Crusader was not the easiest public speaking he'd ever done, though it beat facing down a hostile Council chamber. '

"I invite anyone who wishes to speak of the dead to do so before I formally inter him here." Said Loremaster Vickers.

It behooves me as his commanding officer to announce this to the White Chalice: Star Captain Resnick Vickers was killed by a Blakist assassin following the successful capture of a convoy. The coward surrendered, then used a poison gas capsule, disguised as a tooth, while being interrogated.

It is not a traditional Clan custom to hold funerals or wakes for members of the Warrior Caste. However the IlKhan directed us to blend the best of Clan and Spheroid traditions and I believe a ceremony that marks the end of a life to be one well worth adopting. As such, his ashes will be publicly interred at the bloodhouse chapel, in Wolf City on Sunday, at 5 PM. All who knew him in life are welcome to attend. If there is anything more I can do, please let me know.

-Khan Phelan Kell

PS: He left behind a will and last statement, which is appended to this message.

[Feel free to respond if you wanna say anything to Phelan]

[2/Video]

[Resnick appears in his room, looking rather nonchalant. Composing a will doesn't seem to have him so shaken up.] If you are watching this, by now you know that I am dead. The Remembrance says to us: Let all warriors bear their mark proudly, taking what pride they can in their accomplishments. For our lives should be full of glory, but short. No doubt I will have died in support of the ideals of the Clan way and for that I will have died without regrets. Do not waste time mourning, though if I was killed dishonorably I would not mind if you sought revenge. [He grins a toothy grin a moment, the last time you'll ever see that.]

I understand that before a Spheroid dies, they direct where their earthly possessions will go. I have few. My collection of classical music and opera shall go to whoever desires them most. If noone does, they should go to the Chalice library. The toys I won at the carnival...perhaps some sibko brats will take them? Do as you wish with them. My copy of The Remembrance goes to Madeline Caine.

As for final messages I have the following:

First, tell Tynall Vickers that my surkairede is finally paid.

Second, convey my respect to Allesandra Langelier, Werter Wolf, Ranna, Laura Ericks, Matthew, Hayato Jin, Micheal Wilson, Lowe Gear, Herbert Montgomery, Sora Himoto, Mobius One and all the Warriors who served with me as part of the Bronze Keshik. It has been an honor.

Finally, convey that and my strong affec...neg, my love, to Madeline Caine and Adette Kistler.

This verse is ended. Seyla. [He switches the feed off.]

In a straight up duel between mechs, Resnick was like a fish in water. And speaking of fish in water, he was firing a live shark from the stubby barrel mounted on his mech's left hand, downwards onto the cockpit of a squat Linebacker. He'd used his inferno missiles to corner the laser-heavy mech then jumped in to deliver the coup de grace at point blank range.

He clicked on his comm, asked the other mechwarrior if he wished to surrender as the vicious and improbable fish chewed through his cockpit glasstic with relish. He received several enthusiastic 'aff's in reply so he angled the other arm and bisected the poor creature with one of his lasers. Even so, its head continued horribly chewing and the other mechwarrior had to eject, though she survived with only minor burns. From the distance came the whine and chop of firefighting VTOLs.

In a space cleared in the hangar, a group of Wolf warriors watch as Loremaster Daphne Vickers approaches. She has the strong jaw of the Vickers line too and a confident bearing. Resnick is wearing the Wolf ceremonial mask, not strictly a requirement for this but fitting with his instinct for dramatic presentation. He is kneeling.

"The wisdom of Kerensky has been made clear. The bloodname of Vickers is awarded to Star Captain Resnick. This decision shall bind us until we all shall fall. Seyla."

"Seyla." echo the other Wolves and he rises and removes the mask/helm, to greet those who've come to the ceremony. He's back in action.

[3: Network]

Greetings, Chalice. I have an announcement. As of today, I have won my bloodname. This ensures me a place on the Clan Council, and more importantly, guarantees the use of my genes in the Clan breeding program for the Warrior Caste. You may address me now as Resnick Vickers.

She seems to have picked up the Spheroid bent towards humility, so I think I must reveal this to you as well: Star Captain Ranna has also earned a bloodname, that of Kerensky. This is the most prestigious bloodname possible in the Clans, as it descends direct from our founder, Nikolas Kerensky himself.

[4: The Bar (does it even have a name?)]

And in celebration, there's a rip roaring good time had, with overflowing cups of dark ale, toasts, and the potential for alcohol poisoning. Resnick is seated at the center of the gathering like a king. He raises his mug in salute as he notices you.

Following the grand melee, the Trial of Bloodname begins over a period of several weeks. Khan Phelan Kell has continued to provide free transportation for those onboard the Chalice for those who would like to pop by time to time or to view specific matches.

(1)
Ranna is in the observation room, watching another sort of ritual going on. Two of the warriors are in a room with a bowl like implement, and they both input a coin at opposite end at the top - the mechanism is released, as both coins spin downwards towards the bottom, which is coin-sized.

One coin lands on top of another, and the warrior whose coin is at the top announced "I choose for us to fight in our mechs" and the other said in response "Our location shall be in the outskirts of the city at the north-eastern clearing".

As the next few pairings occur, it seems that not only mechwarriors are involved - Elementals and aerospace pilots too, going by the type of combat that was chosen.

(2)
For a day or two each week for the next few weeks, the observation room would be open for viewing of individual matches. It seems the nominees are given some time to prepare themselves after terms have been dictated in the 'ritual'.

Ranna will be on the Chalice between each of her own match, standing-by for any sorties as usual. But you may find her in the gym or in the simulators practicing more than what was typical of her before.

Disturb/join in?

(3)
Ranna's matches through the Trial has been rather eventful. Then again, those who watch 'live' or recorded replays of all the matches will notice that they have all been eventful - it seems that all those nominated for the Kerensky bloodname were there for very good reasons. Not only were many of them good warriors in their chosen vehicles, they were excellent strategists as well.

Her own highlight is a second round match against an Aerospace pilot, him in his fighter and her in a mech. She had chosen a custom configuration with 4 lasers, and sheared off one wing of his fighter in a single pass - no fault of his, for he had attempted to juke around on his approach. Unfortunately, lasers travel at the speed of light, and she is an accurate shot.

Her final match is slightly different, as those from the White Chalice are invited to the site of battle itself, sitting behind a transparent screen a 'safe' distance away, with supplementary holo-displays. They are not the only one though, as there are a sizable amount of spectators too.

Sandra Pryde is there as well, watching her former foe engage in the Trial.

Ranna's Warhawk exchanges fire against a Direwolf, and for many minutes the two mechs hunt each other in the wooded terrain. Ranna keeps her distance to avoid the heavier mech's autocannons, and in the end her marksmanship proves to be decisive as a salvo of particle bolts cuts cleanly through the Direwolf's weakened left leg, collapsing it front first into the snow.

She pilots the Warhawk back towards the hangar as her victory is confirmed.

Wach the Trial with Sandra and/or meet Ranna in the hangar?

((Sorry for such a late follow up! Work has been busy.))

Final round of the Fetladral bloodname Trial, cut for length. )

[3: action]

One dire wolf pup had proved unwilling to adapt to the wild. Surprisingly not malnourished, it had still bullied its way onto the Chalice during its last Russian stop.

A truly massive animal now, brown with blood red spots that gave it a wounded look, it followed Resnick like a large, menacingly toothed shadow.

"Why do you not leave me be?!" He cried, winding up a kick for it but thinking better as it bared those long fangs.

Isaac was his name, the one he'd impulsively named for the sibkin he'd accidentally-on-purpose killed.

There is a matter concerning the aftermath of the battle that you should know.

There is a furor of activities in the hangars as Clan Wolf mechs and Elementals (most of Ranna's Trinary, in fact) transfer onto the large dropship docked to the White Chalice. This does not appear to be the usual periodic supply run.

Speaking with any of the Clanners, warriors or not, will let you know that they are going back to Wolf City in Siberia for several days to witness a Trial of some sort. Regardless of whether you had received Ranna's invitation, they will extend it again.

A trip to Wolf City!

Several flights are scheduled, so one need not worry about missing a dropship there or back.

(1)

The flight there was uneventful, except perhaps for the fact that the dropship shot up out of atmosphere first, before descending straight down over Siberia to the city, giving one a good view of Earth and a glimpse of Wolf warships in orbit.

Wolf City itself seems quite utilitarian in its layout, the spaceport that the dropship landed in was dead center of the city, and many buildings appear similar in design. However, there is a strong and sleek style to their architecture which is more than just utilitarian and distinctive enough that it is clearly a city unlike any others on Earth. You also see a larger and more monumental structure near the spaceport – the Clan Hall.

A middle-height young man wearing Clan Wolf’s dress uniform greets the group as they leave the dropship. Unlike Ranna’s and Resnick’s rank insignia of two small red stars, his has a single large star.

“I bid you welcome to Wolf City,” he pauses at that with a smile, as if knowing how bland it was. “I am Phelan Kell, Khan of Clan Wolf. It is an honor to finally meet you. Star Captain Ranna spoke often and highly of the White Chalice.”

(2)
Lodging has been provided at the Visitor Center near the spaceport. At a glimpse, the nearest parts of the city are:

Commercial District – this is where you find the most non-Clanners doing trading. The most striking thing you notice is that there is no ‘currency exchange’, and most shops and stores accept all currency and goods for trade. Furthermore, they seem to value the goods more, as they will ask for more currency comparatively.

Residential Zones – making up most of the city, the zones appear to be designed similarly.

Feel free to explore!

(3)
The next day you are invited by Ranna to the Clan Hall. The building is strangely grand compared to the rest of the city, and there are Elementals acting as guards. She leads you to a rather comfortable room. Multiple smaller holovid screens have been setup in addition to the main screen.

It shows a large chamber with circular seating arrangement. Close to twenty people are present, and after a short speech introducing the leader of the ‘Kerensky Bloodhouse’ – each person present takes turn naming a candidate for a ‘Trial of Bloodright’. Ranna seems strangely intent as she watches the proceedings.

After each of them has nominated a name, the leader nominates a list of names, ending with “And the last nomination is Ranna, whose claim to the bloodheritage comes from Natasha Kerensky.”

In total, you count 31 nominations.

(4)
Immediately after that, the view changes to the outskirts of the city – a snow landscape dotted with some forestry. There is not much wind at the moment, so the view is clear. Icons popped up on the screen, and you can see names of the mech and pilot attached to each icon. The icons are scattered about, and you count about thirty.

The various smaller screens can be adjusted to provide different views of the area, or to track a single mech.

“Commence,” came the voice over the screen, and the mechs leap into action.

Clearly this is no simulation, and the weapons are not powered down as missiles arc over terrain, lasers burn molten trails into armor and autocannon rounds leave craters in the snow when they miss. Nobody seems to be taking sides as the free for all rages on.

What is going on here?

((OOC: the trials will be in a later post, as this is long enough. Assume that the dropships will shuttle you back and forth on request, so feel free to come along!))

Several of Clan Wolf's elementals are laid up in the infirmary, not looking happy as they're hooked up to machines that beep and whirr and keep them alive. They have gruesome wounds: huge pitch black bruises bespeaking internal injury from vicious snouts, chunks ripped from their skin. Whatever they fought back there, it was vicious enough to put several of the huge, genetically engineered power-armor troopers hors d'combat for weeks and months.

Then a documentary about marine life comes on the holoset left to keep them from getting too bored and suddenly every hand reaches for a weapon. React? Change the channel?

[2]

It's almost time to go and that means the dire wolves are due to be released soon: Ulric (gray brindle), Natasha (all black), Vlad (red brindle), Kaya (grey with brown paws) and Isaac (brown with blood red spots). Terrifying creatures, they each now stand the height of an adult human. These are not the cuddly pups you made much of six months ago. These are wild fucking animals and even the elementals wrangling them onto the dropship are wary of them.

Still, if you were kind to them, they may remember you...if you're not too scared to get close.

It had been a hard day and Resnick was not one to usually burn the midnight oil. In the wee hours, he was sprawled face down on his spartan bunk. With both roommates absent, he could drift into deep sleep as he drooled on his pillow, dreaming that he was wearing his ceremonial leathers in a vat of sour cream while a floating nova cat (the animal, not the Clan) told him that it was developing an attraction to corpulent women. It had been a long day, full of rocket rides and terrible dolphins who were most definitely not thankful for all the fish.

He certainly didn't expect what happened next.

Anyone who has known our dire wolf pups:

Upon our return to the settlement and the beginning of the Trials for the Kerensky bloodname, we will also be releasing the five dire wolf pups we have been fostering into the wild. The Scientists and I thank you for your assistance in this matter. The time has now come for them to resume their rightful role as apex predators of the tundra ecosystem.

[The actual saying goodbye thread will be in whatever post Kors puts up for the bloodname contest/general stuff in the Wolf settlement]

Clan funeral rites, unlike everything else in their ritual-suffused lives are not particularly elaborate. For Shem, the elemental killed by a sniper unit that decided it wanted to take some of these terrifying invaders with it, his ashes are simply laid in an urn (there had been a darkly hilarious conversation where Resnick interrogated their command staff about where the vats for the recycling of bodies were) along with his giftake (the last and considered most 'pure' genetic sample) in a little ferroplastic container.

He'd been the hardest on Mad and Laura in their training, disbelieving that two baseline humans could ever keep up with the way they practiced. But gradually he'd warmed to them and gave them noogies like the rest of his point.

Outside in the rubble, fourteen Clan Warriors stand in a circle around the final remains. As the senior officer present, Resnick is obligated to read from The Remembrance.

"Let all warriors bear their mark proudly, Taking what pride they can in their accomplishments; For our lives should be full of glory, but short.. Seyla."

"Seyla!" Echo the others, and Shem's ashes are scattered on the soil of Sacred Terra. The ritual over, the Wolves mingled amongst themselves, sharing memories of the dead and expressing hope that his death will guarantee his genes a place in the breeding program.

Some of the Scientists have recovered an important artifact for clanners far from home. They're all draped over the couch in the lounge now, elementals on the floor, Resnick, some of the other mechwarriors and the Scientists and Technicians on the couch itself and chairs and aerospace pilots perched birdlike on the back.

They're watching The Adventures Of Clan Spaniel. A group of anthropomorphic Warriors, led by Polly, their parrot Khan, are on a never ending quest to liberate their homeworlds from five tribes of evil monkeys (thinly disguised versions of the Succesor States). As the show winds on, continuity errors seem to appear, with the previous episode's events seemingly disregarded in the next. This is due to the Diamond Sharks producing two versions, one for Crusader and one for Warden clans. In the former Clan Spaniel begins a final campaign that ousts the evil monkey tribes, starting with Polly or his subordinates dueling and killing each of the monkey kings in turn (despite the monkeys trying various dishonorable ploys). In the latter, some of the monkeys realize that it would be best to befriend Clan Spaniel, and the Clan helps some of the monkeys to defeat the secret evil overlord that was manipulating them.

There's much discussion over what should have happened and who's the best character.

[2//Locked to Mad]

Resnick is checking up on Mad. When he finds her, he doesn't immediately probe after what happened. Sensitivity he may not have but discretion is well within his abilities.

Despite helping out with the repairs on the Chalice, you may have noticed some of the clanners being more restless than usual.

[1]

On this particular day, a rather large screen had been set up together with communication consoles at an unused corner of the hangar. Several clanners had gathered – including former bondsmen. The dire wolf pups were there as well, sniffing about curiously.

Ranna spoke softly to someone over the comms, before ending it with “Aff, my Khan.”

She switched on the video feed on the screen – it was Earth orbit again, except as the screen panned out, a ship almost a mile long went by. It was followed by another ship that was almost 900m long, both carrying the insignia of Clan Wolf. Both appeared damage, though around them were aerospace fighters and dropships flying escorts. The view continued to panned, as the main bulk of the exiled Wolves appeared.

Tens of jumpships, with hundreds of dropships trailed the 2 warships. There were various different designs, and many of them were visibly unarmed.

A secondary display on the screen showed their telemetry, and their intended destination as some of the dropships began their descent into atmosphere – Siberia.

At this, most of the clanners and even some of the wolf pups were silent, watching the screen intently.

Clan Wolf had completed its own Exodus, not unlike their Great Father many centuries ago.

[2]

The aftermath of the first landings were hectic, as Ranna and her fellow clanners took in reports of their available strength.

Finally there were some breather, and Ranna stared at the clipboard in her hand, a list of ship names apparent. Her attention was focused on the final ship listed.

Mother Jocasta, Cameron-class Battlecruiser

She crossed out some words and corrected it with a marker.

Ulric Kerensky Mother Jocasta, Cameron-class Battlecruiser

She sighed softly.
